UPDATED: AUG 8, 2012 Rerate, 500 ml bottle, batch #446, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger, as HaandBryggeriet Fatlagret Porter (Aged in Akevitt oak barrels). ABV for this batch is 8.2%. Appearance: the same. impressive. Aroma: much the same, but with stronger vinous and vinegary notes this time. Flavour: also much the same, but not quite as rich mouthfeel and flavour as when the ABV was 10%. Still very good. Original rating: 500 ml bottle, batch #225, from Vinmonopolet. ABV is 10%. Pitch black colour, big to moderate tan head. Lovely roasty aroma, notes of coffee, leather, dark chocolate, dark dried fruits, some oaky and vinous notes. The flavour has plenty of malty sweetness and roastiness, notes of coffee and dark bitter chocolate, some oaky notes, with a firm hoppy and roasty bitterness in the finish. I might not be able to say that the oak cask previously had contained aquavit, if I did not know, but this is indeed one of the very best Norwegian beers I’ve had. Ever.

UPDATED: FEB 17, 2012 Bottle from Mane Liquor. Heavy black pour with a load of tanned bubbles forming a head. Sweet and spicey dark malts surround the nose with additions of oak, cocoa and slight dark fruits. I’ve never had Akevitt so can’t really comment on that aspect of the beer but whatever the barrels have done to this is sublime. Very balanced, especially for an oak aged beer. Flavours take on heavy wood and dark fruits with moderate to heavy sweetness from quite a high dose of cocoa powder. A touch of ash and liquorice on the finish. Creamy mouth feel and a long bitter finish. Fantastic stuff. I want more for a long time to come

Bedankt Belgbeergeek. 50 cl. fles gedeeld met Belgbeergeek & Sebletitje @ Belgian Ratebeer Winter Gathering of Ultimate Evil. Mijn eerste Akevitt BA, yay. Donker bruin, lichtjes zwart, mokka kraag.

There isn’t tons of Norwegian beer in my area, but from the few I’ve had, it’s pretty clear they how to make some awesome Porters. Speaking of things I don’t know dick about: akevitt. I’ve never had it and don’t know much about what it’s supposed to take like, so I might have to revisit this rating after my ass is more learned. HaandBryggeriet Fatlagret pours near-black and thick. Roast, dark chocolate, herbal tree spirits, and a touch of smoke. Flavor follows the nose. This tastes largely like your typical roasty, rich Imperial Porter but with generous notes of juniper and earth. Viscous, stick-to-your-bones mouthfeel. Some warm booze. I’m going to need to much more HaandBryggeriet in my life.

Pours a rich black brown with a nice head of light brown bubbles. Nose is rich dark chocolate, molasses and raisins. Taste is dry, with a hint of roasted malt, chocolate and black coffee bitters on the finish. Body is silky and slightly lively. Very nice and rich finish.

Barwa: czarna, nieprzejrzysta. Piana beżowa, drobno pęcherzykowa, obfita, utrzymująca się i ładnie oblepiająca szkło. Aromat: ciemne słody, czekolada, lekka kawa, jakby owies, i nuty bimbrowo - alkoholowe (w pozytywnym znaczeniu). Interesujący. Smak: pełny, słodowy, słodki. Następnie nieco bardziej wytrawna kontra, czekolada gorzka, kawa, nieco paloności i wyraźnie alkoholowy finisz. Następne piwo z norweskiego browaru HaandBryggeriet, przywiezione z Krakowa.

Bouteille 50cl. Moustache Blanche. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. A- Anise, smoke, leather, roasty, spuce, campfire. A- Black color, dark liquid, brown head. T- Smoke, char, roasty, tobacco, anise, juniper. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, complex finish. O- Really interesting stuff. Not sure what aquavit tastes like but it’s definitely in here because there are flavors I don’t recognize. Almost boarderline smoked. Interesting for sure and almost overbearing. Sorta reminded me of a scotch. Great stuff just one of a kind for sure.
