COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is our new X-mas beer for the coming season. Milder and less powerful roasty taste than Nissefar. More maltiness from the crystal malts and more fruity taste from lots of aroma hops, incl a hard to describe taste from our secret ingredient.

Bottle enjoyed at home from batch #404, 2011 edition
Pours dark brown, almost black in glass, big dense tanned head. Very nice look. Smells of cloves, cinnamon, cardemomme, coffe and the typical aroma of Haandbryggeriets house yeast. Taste is malty, no sweetness whatsoever. I find glgg tones and some dry fruits. Palate is dry but not as oily as it could be. Still quite nice. Finish has a very nice and powerful bitterness. But stil, i think the beer lacks a bit of balance to make it to highest scores out there

Bottle, bought @ Bunker Beer.
Serious gusher. Pours deep brown to black with a big, bubbly, beige head. Aroma has cherries, roasted malts, coriander, milky chocolate, cinnamon, a bit of bog myrtle. High carbonation, thinish mouthfeel with some dryness. Flavour is malty, chocolate, some cinnamon. Good malty and spicy dryness in the finish. Light warming finish. Okay, even if the high carbonation detracts.

Nice. The taste should be stronger, the alcohol adds sweetness nicely, but tastes through a bit too much.

Malziger und auch cremiger Antrunk, der leider etwas zu mild gehalten ist. Die Malzigkeit ist angenehm gesetzt und ausreichend aromatisch, wenig klebrig, cremig malzig, kaum s, trocken. Nett. 7/8/9/9/8/8

Bottle. Slight gusher, a very enthusiastic caramel-colored head comes right up to say hello and be hastily introduced to my glass. In it, it settles as a deep brown, near-black body. The massive caramel head stays a long, long time - almost too much beef here if you ask me; I like to actually NOT drink my way through lots of foam before the first sip. Aroma, when I get through to it, is lots of dark malts, yeasty notes, hints of chocolate and coffee. Some semi-caramelized roasty maltiness seems to be dominant. Taste-wise, it appears that the particular "Haandbryggeriet" signature flavor is at work again; Ive mentioned this before with their dark beers and I dont know where it comes from but I generally dont take too well to it. This time, fortunately, its fairly well integrated and balanced in the overall brew, which has a kind of "imperial brown ale" profile to it. Soon, as the beer gains temperature, some real disappointments start to show: lots of earth, wet leaves and cellar tones which does not go well with the earlier mentioned HB signature profile. The result is a horribly imbalanced, bitter and earthy aftertaste which really is too much for me. Shame, because it started out so well. Im not getting this again, but of course (as always) I take into the rating account that a lot of other people apparently LIKE this kind of specialty profiling from Haandbryggeriet. I dont.

Batch 308. Brewed 2010-08-31. Best before 2012-08-31.

Pours very dark, close to black. A huge head forms immediately and I cant pour more than half the bottle before the glass is full. At the bottom of the glass there are many "underwater co2 volcanoes", where tiny bubbles stream out at break-neck speed! The head eventually tries to settle down, but takes its time. The consistency of the head is amazing - thick as a brick! Tilting the glass doesnt disturb it the least! Seriously, its the thickest foam Ive ever seen on a beer. I had to use a spoon and dig my way down! I could hold the spoon upside down, and the foam stuck to the spoon!

Ok, lets move on! Theres more here than foam! Initially the nose is coca cola, fresh hops and pine, then it turns into beautiful caramel and milk chocolate!

Aroma starts out quite hoppy, fresh and fruity, with some grassy notes, then it turns roasty, with earthy notes, and ends in a nutty aftertaste which then turn back into the hoppy goodness from the start! Very nice! Taste is mildly sweet first, and finishes with a good hoppy bitterness. Theres also that "Haandbryggeriet aroma" which Im not sure where comes from - the yeast? I taste it in most of their beers (and I really like it). Mouthfeel is nice and thick, and the carbonation is soft. Quite smooth overall. And overall a very good beer, complex yet easy to drink! Haandbryggeriet has been accused of being inconsistent in the quiality of their beers, but one thing is for sure: when they succeed, which they often do, they make some darn fine beer in my opinion!
