Once, every farm in Norway was required by law to brew its own ale. All of that ale had a natural smoky taste because the malt was kilned by fire, and most of it was spiced with juniper berries. Norwegian Wood, a recreation of that traditional style, is made by the "Hand Brewery" - four guys brewing in their spare time, on an absurdly small scale.

Draft at Pizzeria Paradiso Georgetown. Poured a mostly clear red color, small tan head. Aroma was fresh forrest campfire. Not too smokey, some light fresh cut wood? Light sweet malts. Interesting.

From bottle. Color is dark copper, with moderate foam of beige color. Aroma signaling the smoked character in an interesting non-invasive way, but also malt, in the form of caramel. Body is medium-thick. Taste consistent with aroma, again smoked and caramel, maybe licorice. Some sweetness and some bitterness, beer well balanced. Palate is nice too.

Rating #2210 - 2015.12.02 - @7Degrees Beer School. Pours a dark reddish brown color. thin head. Unreal aroma of ripened juniper berry, wood smoke, earth, chocolate, caramel. Lots of smoked malt character present, tempered with a spiciness (coriander, clove, nutmeg?). Phenomenal old world brew.

Bottle from the back of my fridge. Pours murky brown and has a real smoked wood aroma with a sort of brine quality as well. molasses and figs, peat and a some more exotic fruit. Good length, smoky flavour some light bitterness on the finish and molasses flavour. Very tasty.

Robe cuivre fume.

Beer dark brown, somewhat hazy. creamy beige foam and bubbly. complex scent with notes of burnt wood, smoked malt, wine, resin and moss. Presence of juniper but little dominant. solid flavor with notes of charred wood, smoke, bread, candy, sweet cereals, burnt sugar and heather. medium bitterness, slightly sweet and good and on par complex balance between malt, hops and smoke.
