COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Once, every farm in Norway was required by law to brew its own ale. All of that ale had a natural smoky taste because the malt was kilned by fire, and most of it was spiced with juniper berries. Norwegian Wood, a recreation of that traditional style, is made by the "Hand Brewery" - four guys brewing in their spare time, on an absurdly small scale.

(50 cl bottle) Hazy, brown beer with a creamy yellow(ish) head and some chunky sediment. Aroma is moderately smoky, along with licorice, woo, moss. The juniper berries are present, but less dominant than expected, and seem to bring a more fruity touch to the whole thing. Still makes associate pinewood forests and heathlands. Nearly burnt sugar. Medium bitterness, slightly sweet and sour. Medium bodied, soft to medium carbonation. Almost creamy texture. Overall a good mouthfeel. Well balanced, alcohol well-hidden. Complex enough, but not too exhausting/demanding. Recommended!

Temmelig underlig øl, den smager af røg, men virker som om der er en fejl i den.

Murky amber, brown-ish, small light beige bit of foam. Low retention. Sweet and smokey nose, with a mellow seabuckthorn-like acidity, some fragrant wood (hints of white oak?), smoked meats, berries, caramel. The front is nice, with some juicy, mildly tart berries, some sweet malt, smoked dried wood and grain. Some caramel crust, dried grass, mild hay, with a nice juniper fragrance developing, nice and sharp, reminding me of gin. Some bitterness, woody in nature, with a lot more smoke in the finish, but not the bacony one usually found in rauchbiers. A stronger, burnt, ashy kind, dry and rugged. Some bit of caramel and that gin note lingers, too. Medium body and carbonation. A tiny bit of warm alcohol. A solid traditional beer, really interesting, not holding anything back, at the risk of being a bit too rough. But i enjoyed it a lot.

Bottle. I guess I’m going off the smoked ales but I prefer this to the heavy malty black smoked beers out there. I am a little dissapainted however, I’m not getting that much juniper or wood, just smoke (but in a good Belgian fashion).

*Batch 997 MA 22.06.2018) (2139-230317)
