4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Poured an almost inky-black from a 0.5L bottle into a stemless snifter. No head formed, just some bubbles that quickly dissipated and left a dark tan ring around the black abyss within. On my second glass I purposely tried to form a head (pouring high and straight), but this brew was determined to stand its ground, again leaving only the inviting darkness. We sometimes use terms like "no light can pass through it" to describe how dark a given Stout might be. In this case I took advantage of having no stem on the glass, and placed a halogen flashlight squarely against its bottom. This Stout swallowed everything that bulb could put out, so ... "no light can pass through it". Really!
The aroma was all chocolate. I expected (and hoped for) coffee, but it wasn’t there. On my first sip I felt it was too cold, and decided to let it set for several minutes. My second sip revealed an immediate, but soft sweetness, followed by a smooth transition to a moderate bitter at the end.
This is a full body Stout that’s "thick and slick" on the palate. Very soft carbonation, but not flat at all. It possesses a quiet, moderately long finish. Also, given the 11% abv I was surprised (and pleased) that the alcohol never made itself evident.
This was a very enjoyable beer. And for what it is, it’s a "Great Beer". That said, for my own liking, it wasn’t as complex as I would have liked. The sweetness was constant, and I think a hint of coffee would have been ideal. But you can put this one in my Christmas stocking any time. Job well done by the brewers at Haandbryggeriet.
Dark brown, has a nice dark malt character...good...not sure what's distinctive about it to get it at 99 percentile...just a nice imperial stout. CraftBeerNick (2725) - London Town, Greater London, ENGLAND - OCT 5, 2017
Bottle at home, 5th October 17. Pours black, dark tan head. aroma is coffee, liquorice, roast malts, meaty. Taste is liquorice, dry, sweet and bitter, bovril, leather. Good and solid imperial stout, as per the description, doesn't deviate. Muggus69 (2662) - Yarram, Vic, AUSTRALIA - OCT 1, 2017
500mL bottle from Carwyn Cellars. Batch 1015 BB 21.09.2020
Pours a proper opaque black body - head is dark tan head, slightly orange hued, creamy.
Intense nose - dark roast coffee, cocoa, orangey hops, rich earthy toffee, nutty malt.
Big syrupy, slick, oily body, great weight, warming, lovely texture, low carbonation.
Inky, lots of dark sugars, burnt chocolate, bitter coffee, licorice, nuts, get a good orangey sort of hop character, touch of vanilla. Finishes with warming booze, plenty of bitterness.
Formidable, brilliant! mariuspoenari (2954) - The Hague, NETHERLANDS - SEP 10, 2017
Pitch black with a thin tan head. Notes of roasted malts, dark chocolate, smoke, ash, burnt coffee beans, prunes, bitter cherries. Intense roast and chocolate flavours. Full body, low carbonation, smooth mouthfeel. tandembrauer (1558) - Stavanger, NORWAY - AUG 31, 2017

Tap in Gulating, served too cold.
Pours black, ruby reflections. Lack of any head.
Nose: sweet-spicy, pastries, coffee, little of dried prune. The aroma is a little bourbon-like, barrelly. Aroma is sweet. And taste is dry. Very boozy. Watery and empty, hasn’t opened too much with warming up. I would believe there was any weird, forgotten fruits’ jam addition. Cybuch (519) - Muszyna, POLAND - AUG 14, 2017
W aromacie czekolada, szlachetny alkohol, kakao, palonosc. Barwa bardzo ciemny braz, piana ladna, pozostajaca. W smaku bardzo wytrawne, kawowe. Spodziewalem sie troche czegos innego. Alkohol nie wyczuwalny w smaku, ale rozgrzewa konkretnie. Fajny RIS, brakuje gestosci i slodyczki, btw goryczka srednia do wysokiej. Dobre, ale nie do konca w moich preferencjach. 0,5l bottle at home. BB 21.09.2020. black color, small coffee colored head. smells earthy, brown sugar, bit milky, light berry notes, light oxidation, lightly nutty. nice smell overall. full body, light carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes earthy, tons of peat & ash, grassy, milky, peppery, nutty, marzipan, did not like it at first. but after a bit of warming up, some sugary, berry, grassy and more sweet earthy notes come through. finishes lightly sweet with notes of earth, sugar and grassy notes. did not like the taste at first when it was rather cold. after warming up its not a bad beer, drinakble but still rather heavy. a bit on the sugary side (when warm). metalspice (1048) - Jevnaker, NORWAY - JUL 17, 2017
Helt svart med beige, kremete skum. Lukter kaffe, lakris og nøtter. Mye det samme i smaken sammen med karamell og noe mørke bær. Herlig, tykk munnfølelse. nearbeer (5558) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - JUL 16, 2017
500 ml Batch 973 bottled Apr. 2016. Inky black with the creamiest non-nitro head ever seen. Aroma is dark chocolate, dark toffee, dark bread, dark fruit, graham cracker, real licorice and a touch of blackberry. Flavors of the same mix plus some espresso with cream, roasted nut, char and ash. Medium-heavy body is silky smooth with low-medium carbonation and the most dangerous drinkability, with no hint of the 11%. I guess my ratebeer quest is over, this is my only perfect score ever given.
