Beer has a very intriguing smokiness - less "smoked meat" like you get with most German rauchbeers and more charcoal briquet. Quite dark and fairly dry. Not off-putting, just a bit bizarre. glennmastrange (2901) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - OCT 24, 2010
Bottle. Moderate aromas all around, with cereal and milk chocolate for the malt, herbs and resin for the hops, earth for the yeast and background notes of smoke, wood and brown sugar. Head is small, creamy, frothy light brown with good lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is muddy brown with a chunk or two at the bottom. Flavor starts lightly to moderately sweet and moderately acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and acidic, moderately bitter and a touch sour. (Bottle, batch #273, at Maltainen Riekko, Helsinki) When serving me the waitress said that this would be smokier than Schlekerla Märzen. Well, that wasn’t true. There was smoke and tar both in the aroma and the taste but it wasn’t really dominating. I could also sense liquorice, roastedness and fennel seeds. The last one came to me as a surprise but the flavour did fit in. No fennel seed were added according to the very minimalistic label. Aftertaste contained some metallicness which dropped the overall points a bit but otherwise good smoked beer.
