cask. This poured a murky burnt orange with floaters and obviously no head. Aroma is wood apricot light sourness and earthiness. This is not puckeringly sour but tart on the tongue and a little sour burn in the throat, I like the balanced sourness with the wood and fruit flavors. Thd fruit is there but nothing hits you over the head. i enjoyed this beer and would like to try it with carbonation.
Past notes. On tap for hotd 20th anniv. Colour...hazy orange-amber with a thin ecru head. Nose...very fruity and rather funky with cherry notes and pit fruits to go with esters of wood rosin. Palate...intensely sour, with dry oak and dried cherries that marry nicely with flavours of Cotlets and apricot fruit leather. There is vanillin here and notes of cherry stems and pits, and its all quite tart! The finish is lengthy and still puckery with plenty of fruit. pushkinwow (2851) - Ottawa, CANADA - DEC 23, 2013
On tap at the HotD 20th Anniversary party. Hazy dark orange with a thin veneer of cream head. Sour apricot aroma, oak, alcohol, some cherries, tart and sour, some grass. Mild carbonation and full body with only a hint of vinegar which is nice. One of the stand outs from the party. daknole (11049) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - NOV 24, 2013
Hazy orange pour, white head. Sour! Unripe stone fruit, berries, lactic sourness, hints of vinegar. Damn this was quite a treat at the HOTD 20 year anniversary. douglas88 (9515) - Portland, Oregon, USA - NOV 11, 2013
On tap at the 20th Anniversary Festival. Pours a cloudy orange and copper color (almost pink) with a small white head. A rich bouquet of fresh fruit, wood and sugars. The flavor is likewise dominated by sweet rich fruit, specially apricot, tannins, some vanilla, sour sawdust, vinegar. Very easy to drink. Finishes with sour cherries. Lovely brew. Draft at the source for the 20th anniversary celebration. Hazy orange color, off white head. Aroma of tart, sour stone fruit. Taste is tart apricot, moderate funk, berries, citrus. One of my favorites of the day.

On tap on 2-24-12. From notes. Appearance is a deep orange with thin lacing. Aroma consists of a sharp raspberries mixed with the apricots. Can definitely tell this is a tart one from the nose. The taste is quite delicious. Apricots, blood oranges, raspberries, and more. There’s a slight amount of acetone, but in small enough amounts to add to the taste. Palate is effervescent and crisp. Once it hits the tongue, the beer expands across the palate and the roof of the mouth. Overall, I waited far too long and missed this too many times, so I might have been too excited to try it, but it’s a great beer and Alan should make more. Tasted at a beer dinner at Hair of the Dog with Alan and Sean Paxton. This beer is a slightly hazy orangish pink color. The nose is very tangy fruity with the raspberries and cherries really standing out. There is just a hint of hops and malt. The body is rich and the acidity is well balanced with the tangy fruit flavors shining through till the finish. This beer tasted amazingly fresh considering it’s age. Very fun. boFNjackson (4201) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUL 22, 2011
UPDATED: JUL 23, 2011 Cask pour @ Hair of the Dog... Poured pinkish/orange with a thin white head and floating fruit chunks. Nose had some funk, horse blanket, sweaty tones, with light fruits. Very dry, mild carbonation. Slight burning and souring qualities. Strong fruit flavors, apricots, berries that were sweet and tangy. Citrus tones too. Some oak and woody qualities. A little bit of acetone but it was well tamed. Horse blanket, feety towards the end. luttonm (6561) - Seattle, Washington, USA - DEC 29, 2009
Draft Brouwer’s Big Wood 09. Huge pink ruby, tightest thin head. Huge nose, cutting sour malt. Rush of salmony, raspberry/strawberry flavor. Fresh, very forward. Red, tasty, special. Not as hot or popping as a Cantillon but an amazing American sour.
