2.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
I'd rather drink lighter beers...this was my first Barleywine, and I always say I'll try anything once, but I never said I'd try it again.

Bottle from batch 56:
Poured a nice medium gold with a huge head that remained throughout. The lacing is a virtual work of art.
The smell is a mix of fruit, hops, malt and vanilla....very complex and quite enjoyable to linger over.
The taste is not what I expected from the smell but is a sweet mix of malt and very bitter, grapefruit like tones from the hops. It has a very warming effect from the 10%abv but the taste actually hides the alc pretty darned well for me. A very good brew and I'd buy again without hesitation.
Well, I've had my first HOTD Fred since this review, batch 70, and I now notice how fruity this brew really is. Tons of orange, grapefruit, tropical fruit, big pine, yet the sweetness from some of the fruit does a nice job of semi balancing the citrus and the pine. I still think that this is the best HOTD brew and yeah, I'll buy some again. ;^) Btw, I've adjusted my review accordingly. Btw, P2, it pours a cloudy medium gold. ;^) wombat23 (1665) - Texas, USA - OCT 15, 2017
Shared 12 oz. bottle. Hazy orangish-gold, off-white head. Aroma of fruit cake. Taste is fruit cake, toffee, caramel, honey. Very rich. Warming finish. Nice! darbeer75 (955) - Round Rock, Texas, USA - OCT 15, 2017
Aroma: rich, sweet, fruity; Appearance: hazy amber pour with particulates floating around; Taste: follows nose with lots of booze; Palate: heavy body with long, sweet finish; Overall: good but overwhelming in larger quantities. Would probably not get again. balloonbuffoon (532) - - OCT 11, 2017
12floz bottle, not dated (batch #98), $6 paid. There is little carbonation from opening to the pour into a pint glass, where this beer appears a cloudy, dark-yellow/light-orange with very minimal head. Caramel-butterscotch aroma sets the tone for a more English stylized barleywine. Palate is of most dominantly butterscotch in flavor that is not cloying. Bitterness is mild, carbonation is low, body is full, and some heat from the alcohol is present. Its pretty good, not bombastic in a good way. It's sort of a let down though, because of the acclaim that I think much came about during the earlier years of online beer rating.

Very nice full body that actually balances the huge bitterness for a change. I'd like less bitter to be great. Hair of the dog portland

On draft @BBF17, Bodegraven. Tasted side by side with Fred from the Wood and Cherry Fred. Amber colored, small head. Malty nose, hops, perhaps some spices. Alcoholic flavor, malts, raisins, hops. Good as a base beer to experiment with, but imho not really impressive stand-alone.
