This special release was brewed on July 12th and bottled on September 8th, 2005. I used locally grown black currants to give this beer an intense berry flavor. Made with love, reverance and respect for the great beers of Belgium.

SQNfan (591) - Wheaton, Illinois, USA - DEC 7, 2008
This poured terribly cloudy with shades of dark red and brown. The nose showed off lots of cassis and was quite enjoyable. In the mouth it was dry with a cardboard-like flavor mixed with chocolate in malt. The finish was quick and simple but overall this was an enjoyable enough beer.

ditmier (1508) - Boise, Idaho, USA - NOV 18, 2008
2005 Bottle - Pours a murky purple with floaties, large head that has the color if you mixed purple and brown (not sure what to call that color)...aroma is tart, fruit and raw grain, flavour bites back, sour and acidic, the currants are everpresent, but the rest is muddled and sharp...I really enjoyed this when I had it last year, a much different experience, and I don’t know if time in the bottle will continue to change this puppy...a great experience, but certainly one to share with a few friends...

12 oz bottle from summer secret santa (i think if i got it from you and im not giving you the proper props im sorry). pours dreadful muddy purple/grey/brown. ugly purple nipple puff. this is the second worst pour ive ever seen and the other, oh, we do not speak its name!! aromas of gritty black current and nothing else. the flavour is tolerable and is all fruit. its actualy drinkable with no signs of infection or other badness. im sorry for rating this as im sure its way past its prime. i love HOTD and it pains me to give any of their bres a bad rating but this is the highest this could have scored this brew on the date i had it. if this makes me a bad person and a ratings whore then i again apoligize.

8-28-08 bottle shared wtih lb4lb thanks to ditmier
Thick diarrhea water with no head. Smell is high fruity alcohol. Sharp sweet and tart flavor that has this huge aerosol hairspray flavor that just adheres to the tongue. Thick mouthfeel but not really in a good way. Just too chunky and awkward for me.

Bottle in trade from ditmier. Thanks!
Pours a muddy unattractive reddish color. Very murky and odd, much like the doggie claws I had long ago. Smell is fruity, berries and a touch of alcohol. Taste is semi sweet, tart and a bit of fruity berry like alcohol. Dry finish. Muddled dry fruity tart flavors, but not particularly great overall, and very strange.

BrewCzar (108) - St Louis, Missouri, USA - AUG 12, 2008
Bottle pours cloudy mud brown with a thin lighlty lacing head. Aromas are mostly sour berries with hints of sweetness. Taste is bitter and sour, currants are apparent with sour cherries.

Vac (2445) - San Diego, California, USA - JUL 6, 2008
Pours wtih a very murky amber body with a purple hue topped by a thin to medium thick head with a little lacing. It’s slightly sweet yet sour with a note of berries. Medium bodied, dry and crisp.

12oz bottle with thanks to SamuraiArtist & msubulldog25, who each sent me some. Pours an unappetizing murky orange/rust with a faint wisp of a head. Taste was berry-fruitiness, raisins and malt sweetness. Tangy with a somewhat heavy/sugary mouthfeel. The bottle seems to have aged better than a lot of the other reviews I have read.

TheEpeeist (3709) - Media, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 24, 2008
12 oz bottle. Muddy brown with a thin ring of beige foam. Nose is butterscotch, alcohol and raspberry. Medium light with a tang. Taste is yeast and elderberry. Raw bitter and sour notes as the fruitiness fades away. An interesting brew likely better fresh.

From a 12oz Bottle. Also sampled on tap at the brewpub. Pours the color of pink lemonade, topped with a tight bubbled head of creamy pink. One of the most interesting beers I’ve sampled, appearance wise. Completely opaque, saturated with pink currant pectins. Fruity currants in the nose, creamy with a touch of herbal pepper. Touches of vanilla and toffee malt, but mostly just creamy currant. Currant Italian Soda. Hints of mild acidic funk, presumably from the currant skins. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel with a milky texture. Big berry flavor with a very mild acidity and tannic skin quality. Highly unusual texture and color, but the flavors are quite enjoyable. Yogurt-like is an awesome description, as is the waxy texture (thanks, notalush). This rating is a composite from bottles I’ve sampled along with drafts at the brewery. I have to admit that I’ve had a truly awful bottle of this beer - reeking of rotten fruit - but the draft and other bottles I’ve had have all been one of the most unique, intriguing, and enjoyable fruit beers I’ve ever tried. I love currants. Rating doesn’t consider the bad bottle I’ve had.
