Happy Anniversary to Qbrick! 10 Years is a fantastic accomplishment in the craft beer world. I’m celebrating with a hakusekikan Hurricane Barleywine 10%(or more?) that is 5 years old - I heard it was the 2009 version... A ruby amber pour, it’s got a fantastically sweet nose of candied fruits - figs, plums, raisins. Once it warms up it gets lots of heat and phenolic? The body is light and dry. The taste is fruity, sweet, sherry, a bit nutty, umeshu plum like sweetness. Good but after all the gushing reviews I expected more. Then again it is a few years older now. adriano (5) - Roma, ITALY - OCT 1, 2013 does not count
Drinked at Bakushu Popeye in Tokyo, maybe the best Barley Wine... Ever! Wombata (625) - Kobe, JAPAN - MAR 16, 2013
Aroma: pear, wine-like aroma, cola
Palate: Amazingly smooth--outstanding.
Flavor: pear, cola, and roasted flavor
Comment: Viscous yet elegant mouth feel; the body completely disguises the alcohol without being heavy. Probably due to the aging. maekchu (3997) - Hirakata, JAPAN - MAR 1, 2013
Draught during Strong Beer Week at Qbrick (from tasting notes). Aroma has some pear character (like the Vintage). Also vinous, with some hints of chocolate malt and coffee. Some banana, spice (coriander), and sour prunes. Brown w/ yellowish edges. Flavors of pear, cinnamon, pepper, and spice. Long pear and minerally finish. Excellent balance, smooth mouth feel, full-bodied but with finesse. Complex changes from initial to finish. shoulderbroken (4255) - Tokyo, JAPAN - SEP 1, 2012
Tap at Popeye. 2007 vintage. Murky dark amber brown colour. No head at all, just a couple of bubbles. Aroma is boozy stewed fruit, liquorice, boozy sweetness, wood, red wine. Slightly musty. Full on and lovely. Taste is even better! Sweet, little bit spicy, bit of burnt sugar, dark fruit, lots of malt too. Fruit cake, touch of ginger. Amazing. Sweet but not too much, really hides the alcohol. Surprisingly drinkable and therefore very dangerous. Full bodied, but not thick and sticky. A triumph, just wish I hadn’t had it as the first beer here as it was hard to follow.

No real head. Clear deep red body. Earthy vinous strawberry malts aroma with alcohol notes. Sweet, and slightly acidic, alcohol and strawberry taste with earthy spicy notes. Fullish body. Mild, yet hot mouthfeel. Dry-sweet sweet cherry and strawberry aftertaste with vinegary earthy toffee and honey notes. Lovely! Amazing sweet/sour balance and harmony. (0.2l draft at Popeye, Tokyo.) Draught at Popeye Tokyo (rated Apr 2008, vintage 2003).
Head is fully diminishing.
Body is medium brown.
Aroma is moderately malty (cookie, caramel), with notes of wood, honey, raisin, alcohol, orange peel, and maple syrup.
Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic.
Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Medium body, syrupy texture, soft/flat carbonation, moderately alcoholic.
Surprisingly enjoyable aroma for its age, and not obviously oxidized in the usual stale ways. Quite sweet, as expected, but still drinkable. Boozy but not over the top. Quite a bit better than expected. abemorsten (3650) - Mosterøy, NORWAY - NOV 29, 2009
