2003 vintage on draught at Popeye, Tokyo. dark brown colour with a small head. Vinous aroma with chocolate notes. Sour fruits flavours blending with chocolate, especially towards the finish. A joy to the taste buds. shoulderbroken (4256) - Tokyo, JAPAN - SEP 1, 2012
Tap at Popeye. 2007 vintage. Murky dark amber brown colour. No head at all, just a couple of bubbles. Aroma is boozy stewed fruit, liquorice, boozy sweetness, wood, red wine. Slightly musty. Full on and lovely. Taste is even better! Sweet, little bit spicy, bit of burnt sugar, dark fruit, lots of malt too. Fruit cake, touch of ginger. Amazing. Sweet but not too much, really hides the alcohol. Surprisingly drinkable and therefore very dangerous. Full bodied, but not thick and sticky. A triumph, just wish I hadn’t had it as the first beer here as it was hard to follow. maekchu (4054) - Hirakata, JAPAN - MAR 1, 2013
Draught during Strong Beer Week at Qbrick (from tasting notes). Aroma has some pear character (like the Vintage). Also vinous, with some hints of chocolate malt and coffee. Some banana, spice (coriander), and sour prunes. Brown w/ yellowish edges. Flavors of pear, cinnamon, pepper, and spice. Long pear and minerally finish. Excellent balance, smooth mouth feel, full-bodied but with finesse. Complex changes from initial to finish. abemorsten (3683) - Mosterøy, NORWAY - NOV 29, 2009
On tap @ Popeye’s February 2009. Brewed by Niwa at Hakusekikan. Clear dark pour. Fresh flowery aroma. Metallic, gooseberries. Even more complex in taste adding tar and honey. Recommended! Capa (3448) - Kitsap, Washington, USA - APR 28, 2007
Draught at Popeyes. Pours a light golden brown with a thin head. Aroma was sweet alcohol, sherry, dark fruits, and malt. Full, syrupy body. Flavor was similar to the aroma. Dark fermented fruit, sweet malt, molasses, and some wine or sherry tones. Finishes warm and sweet. Very big, very delicious.

A big, BIG beer. THe nose is huge. Notes of caramel, sugar and alcohol obviously. Mothful is big and sweet and very intense. Perhaps a bit too much for me. Definetely worth a try if you like the style. wetherel (1893) - Cupertino, California, USA - JUL 6, 2008
2003 vintage on tap at Popeye’s in Tokyo. 150mL(6oz) sampler. This was almost too much. Brown color. Alchohol apparent in the aroma Mild in flavor. Sweet, but not as much as I expected out of 15%. A little past it’s prime washing the flavors a little too much, but still pretty good. danielcurtis81 (1519) - San Diego, California, USA - JUN 29, 2009
2007 on tap at Bakushu Club Popeye. Pours a deep red hued brown with no head. Sweet caramel, oak, complex malts, port wine in aroma and taste. Very smooth. Sweet but not syrupy. AceOfHearts (1374) - Mountain View, California, USA - JUL 19, 2005
On tap at Popeye’s. Kampai, Popeye, Oppai! Definitely one of the best J-beers I’ve had. Light mahogany with very little head. Aroma is very subtle and complex, mostly of plum, peach, and surprisingly little alcohol. The flavor also makes the 15% number hard to believe! Cherries, subtle sherry that comes out in the finish along with some alcohol coming back out your nose. Very good! I have to admit to rating this with a sub-optimal palette, and so I will definitely try it again (which I would have done anyway!) bitter (1136) - Henderson, Nevada, USA - SEP 18, 2006
