UPDATED: SEP 28, 2009 Aged, on draught at Popeye’s in Tokyo. Almost black, with a bit of Amber. No head to speak of. Rich, fragrant malt aroma, with a good deal of fruit. Moderately sweet, with a strong aroma of Sherry. Hot! Overpowering malt flavor, with a bit of hops. Rather highly attenuated, so not overly sweet. Quite fruity, mild roasting, very strong alcohol. Smooth, rich, hot and strong. Very full body and almost no carbonation. Very tasty, creamy, and fruity with cherries dried fruit and caramel. Very much like a port or Sherry. Excellent.

On tap at Popeye, Tokyo. 2000 vintage. Dark brown with a small froth. Superior complex aroma with raisins, nuts and chocolate as well as potent sour fruit. Chocolate, raisins and everything that tastes good. Smooth as velvet and full-bodied without being sirupy. Top-notch beer. theisti (4157) - Kansas, USA - MAR 24, 2008
12 oz. bottle, 2000 Vintage, courtesy of hogfodder. Pour is brown black with just a rim of a tan head. Aroma of scotchy peaty earthy sweetness caramel, though the whole mix is somewhat muted. Taste is winey, caramelly, a bit earthy and grassy. Also quite a bit of dried fruit in the taste as well. Really good. Thanks for sharing this one Rick! after4ever (8025) - Mukilteo, Washington, USA - MAR 21, 2008
2000. 12-oz. Thanks, Hogfodder! Super dark mahogany, crystal clear, with big caramel golden highlights. Still, flat, headless, laceless. Huge port, dates, figs, and raisins on the nose, along with peat and iodine. Medium, oily body. Port and raisins on the mid-palate. Long figgy/datey finish. Great stuff. Appearance: Pours a dark brown body with a tiny, thin ring of white bubbles.
Smell: Sweet-smelling caramel and chocolate shavings. Roasted prunes. Some boozey notes.
Taste: Caramel and light chocolate maltiness with a candy-coated sweetness. Tart taste of sherry-soaked prunes. Flash of Kikkoman. Not really much in the way of hops or bitterness. Long, warming finish delivers a bit more fruit.
Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: Interesting from the outset. In fairness, it is a tad hot and a bit light bodywise, but still pretty good. CaptainCougar (7133) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - JAN 25, 2008
UPDATED: FEB 14, 2008 2000 vintage bottle thanks to wetherel, best before 12/25/2010: Pours a transparent viscous deep copper ruby with a thin ring of off-white head. Aroma of sweet dark caramel and brown sugar with some raisins and lightly oxidized complexity. Body starts rich and raisiny sweet with some nice light fruity complexity before a warming finish. Seems to have aged very well and should continue to do so. A pretty nice barleywine.
