UPDATED: DEC 12, 2012 Re-rate from Fountainhead, 2012. Much better overall. Distinct barrel character in the nose and on the palate. Rich and chocolatey, lacks any of the sour notes that were previous. Drying rye and roast, the bourbon is there but not over the top. Really clean and easy drinking. Super stuff.
Draft at FoBAB 8. Pours a deep brown/black with dark tan head. Nose is slightly soured, rye notes are prevalent, some spice and chocolate. On taste, you get a nice hit of rye whiskey character, spicy and sharp and a bit pungent. It works pretty well here and the heat never really builds. Main detractor is the astringency it picked up from the oak. Beside that, pretty solid beer.7-4-7-3-15 3.6 SrSilliGose (3331) - pouring bus, New Brunswick, CANADA - NOV 12, 2010

Draft. Black pour. Very tart at first but melds into a nice woody, coffee hinged, dark roast cocoa type stout. Lots of barrel yet decently smooth. phaleslu (10247) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - NOV 16, 2010
Draft sample at FOBAB 2010. Pours a deep brown color with a huge tan head. Notes of chocolate malts, rye, apples, vanilla, roast, bourbon, and milk sugar. Medium-bodied, with a dry, roasty mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Odd mix of cream, roastiness, and spice that seems to work. dinkle50 (1477) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 30, 2013
Deep black pour with a medium espresso head. Slightly fruity aroma. Lots of liquor. Taste is super sweet. Chocolate and tons of booze and bourbon.

Sampled from the tap at 2010 FOBAB. Poured black with a brownish yellow head that lasted throughout the beer. Aroma had a nice rye note with roasted malts and a nice backing whiskey note. Flavor had rye with dry roasted malts and a growing whiskey note that comes out in the finish. Flavor also had a slight off putting vegetable note, but still a really solid beer. pantanap (3366) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 14, 2012
On tap at local option. Newly added... Pours a pretty solid black hue, consistent throughout and topped with a creamy light beige head... Aroma of bourbon for sure being the prominent note with a nice solid bakers chocolate backing. A bit boozy but a nice combination of coconut and vanilla notes to go with the hardness... Flavors are sweet and smooth with a distinguished barrel character which is assertive but not boozy. Chocolate notes are notable and not completely overwhelmed. Smooth creamy body with lighter than normal carbonation which works in nicely. Little spicy boozy character on the backend. Not sure if this is a newer batch than the precious reviews but this was fairly nice. Pailhead (6539) - Rochester Hills, Michigan, USA - NOV 16, 2013
On tap: The aroma consists of chocolate, black licorice, coffee, vanilla, faint bourbon, and burnt notes. It’s a dark brown with no transparency and a small khaki head. The flavor starts with dark chocolate and a touch of fruit. The finish has coffee, vanilla, light bourbon, and oak. It’s medium-full bodied with soft carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. hombrepalo (1971) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - NOV 8, 2010
Sampled @ FoBAB 2010. What’s up with this one? Wasn’t sure this was a stout. Was hoping for a good one from HA. Poured a usual stout color with little brown head. Smell like rye, cherries and booze. Taste is sour/ malts with a grannysmith apple finish. Had to clean my palate and try this again. A weired brew. Guess this was an experimental brew for HA. Sampled at FoBAB 2010. Huge tan head on a very dark brown colored beer. Aroma has some rye, a bit of whiskey and an odd off fruit note. Tart cherries? Flavor has a nice bourbon component, light chocolate, and off fruitiness. Slightly disappointing as I was expecting excellence from Half Acre, but it was far from bad.
