Really good. Sweet and the booze is well hidden with vanilla coffee and some cocoa flavors. Had on tap at their Balmoral Taproom

On tap at FoBAB, swing and a miss, think there might be infection issues or something. not good.

UPDATED: MAY 22, 2011 On tap at FoBAB, just now finally getting to this, shows you right there how much I enjoyed it...Black with a light tan head, not much retention...The aroma is wood, some coffee, not much going on, surprised this is barrel aged...The taste brings out more coffee to start, roasted, with some more wood. This is boring and seems a waste of wood as you can’t tell it was even in the barrel.

at FOBAB, pours black with tan head. nose is sour. flavor of sour veggies and smoke, some cocoa. not good.

FoBAB. I also preferred the regular Big Hugs. Pours black. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, funk, and oak. Actually seemed a little thin and the bourbon didn’t blend well.

Draft sample at FOBAB 2010. Pours an opaque dark brown, near black, with virtually no head. Notes of vanilla, chocolate, bourbon, a little oak, coffee with cream, and I also got some odd cherry and chili notes. Maybe I had residue in my glass from other beers. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. Lighter-bodied than I’d want in a typical impy stout. Not bad, though.

FoBAB 2010: Jet black with minimal head and lace. The aroma has notes of lactic acid, slight buggy funk, coffee, chocolate, ashy charred and slightly smoked barrel, some vanilla and fusel alcohol. The taste is all over the place, some sweet lush malts and bitter coffee, vanilla wafers and bourbon, rye like snap but sadly some acetone and chemical tones that while not overpowering does ruin the moment. The mouth feel is sticky but a tad thinned out. I was really looking forward to this but was left disappointed. Hope to try the regular version soon.

Draft at FoBAB 8. It’s unfortunate what this turned into as I really liked the unaged version. Pours a thick black with tan head. Nose is chocolate, fusels & acetone. The barrel destroyed this one, pulling apart the soft fun stuff and injecting cheap bourbon. Bitter and astringent. Blech.

TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - NOV 10, 2010
Sampled at FoBAB 2010 (Chicago, IL). Pours a roasty brownish hue, huge cakey light brown chocolate milk head. Laces well. Aromas are rye, roasty malts, sweet cocoa and toffee, creamy body, some bourbon and oak, sour twang. Initial is roasty and spirit ridden, bourbon and toasty malts, sour vinegar, acrid. Roast and big sweet toffee. Finish is sweet, mellow caramel and rye, vanilla, cocoa, and an out of kilter twang.. Meh.. I didn’t love Big Hugs, but this came with some good and some bad.. Better than I had expected, but still something was off
