Draft on tap at The Gage (Chicago, IL). Congratulations, guys. Pours a luscious glowing copper dark ruby hue. Gentle haze and glowing elements throw some deeper red copper glow throughout, yet not changing at the edges. A frothy tannish head sits atop, stays a good sized layer and laces pretty well overall. Aromas are distinct carmelized malts and biscuits. Toast, caramel, and bready malts push forward with touches of red stone fruit, more carmelization, toast, nutty earthy quality. Mellow sweetness, gentle spice, and mellow dry earthy hopping let the darker carmelized malt dominance take the reigns. More cherry, touch of red currant. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied offering a firm malty feel, toast and biscuits, carmelized malts, bread, touches of sweeter toffee into the equation, but not as sweet as anticipated from the nose. Middle dries out a touch more, a bit grainy, toasty, and dry earthy mellow hops hit a bit, touch of soapiness, grass, light floral hit. Gentle red berry, dried fruit elements catches on in the middle and into the backend, dried cherry, red currant, mellow yet taking some jabs at times. More grainy and mellow yeast/spicey elements into the back work well with the toast/carmelization/dry earthy hopping. Light and drinkable yet with some depth of flavor for the style. Enjoyed, while it’s still just an Irish Red Ale.. It’s a pretty good one. Remains more dry into the finish yet still gives some character.
