Firkin pour at the tap room. Pours a clear, brown color with a tan head. Aroma is coffee, not much else. Medium on the palate with light carbonation. Flavor is bitter, coffee, some malty sweetness. Cask at Firkin. Poured a clear medium brown color. Soap bubble light tan cask head. Smelled of distinct coffee, but little else. Light to medium bodied and dry. Cask at Fountainhead. Pours a deep brown with ruby highlights and a taupe head. Nose is strongly of fresh roasted coffee, soft hop notes and cocoa. Light green pepper notes come through as well. On tasting, crisp and refreshing with a nice chilled coffee component. Roasty and robust. the coffee is more dominant in the nose than on the palate, which is fine by me. Really well integrated coffee here that I think could become an issue if it weren’t so fresh. Really good coffee beer, better than coffee bender, IMO. Cask pour on at Fountainhead (Chicago, IL). Pours a nice murky dark brownish copper pour, some hazy glowing bottom and edges show amber and copper. A frothy loose light brown darker tan head sits atop and sticks around, a bit cakey with small lacing. Aromas are rich Dark Matter coffee, giving off espresso, creamy sweetness, and touches of cocoa and mocha among a stronger coffee presence. Gentle floral and earthy hopping, crisp biscuits, toffee, and toast. Some caramel, pale malts, but coffee dominates the nose overall. Initial is lighter end of the spectrum in body, offering some good coffee and toast up front, espresso, touches of vanilla, coffee. A sweeter type of coffee feel with some lighter pale malts, touches of biscuits, and a gentle toast. Middle thins out a bit, showing the decent to moderate hopping that Over Ale tends to, earthy and floral, dry grass and a fleeting lemon. Some toast, pale malts, and a touch of sweeter malt oomph that gets surrounded by a sensible moderate Dark Matter coffee appeal. Finish is lingering dry hop and coffee, very nice with touches of gentle pale malts, some gentle spice. Pretty damn drinkable. Flavors are on, perhaps a touch underbodied. I can see others not liking this, but the coffee really gave it an interesting layer AND worked well with the hops and malt base and inevitably upped my overall score. Cask was a good choice here.
