On draft, rating from notes. Bright, shining, golden pour with a thick white head. Fruity, tart aroma with pronounced red apple and bear notes, some malty graininess as well as nondescript fruitiness. Apparent booze, some honey and macintosh apple notes. Flavor is quite boozy with some herbal hop bitterness, lots of sweet malts with mostly apple and pear fruity notes. Medium bodied, finishes with quite apparent alcohol. Draft on tap at the tap room (Chicago, IL). Guess I’ll rate this while I’m here. Pours a deeper golden orange hue, some haziness, darker body with some orange golden glow on bottom and edges. A small frothy whitish head atop dies to a film, laces small. Aromas are gentle sweetness, bready, dough, some straw. Grainy cereal malts, kiss of orange and faint earthy heather, grass. Mellow yeasty elements come into focus, mellow strength as it warms up. Gentle spice, clove, pretty clean though. Mellow fruity and cereal sweetness. Initial is apple and a bit of spritzy cider feel, some grainy malts, dough, green apple and gentle pear. Some mellow yeastiness, spice, and touches of dough, bready malts, faint honey. More fruity, a bit tart. More dry crisp backend, mellow sweet dough, some grass, faint honey. Crisp yeast provides mellow spice. Lighter body, mellow warmth but well attenuated. A bit fuzzy and dry into the backend and finish. Linger apple, some dough, gentle pear. A lot of apple, gentle sweetness. Quite dry as we finish up. Tasty. A lot different than the typical American take on the style. This isn’t girthy and sweet, laden with honey and fruity esters. It’s more gentle, the fruit and sweetness still crop up but are well integrated. The back and finish, dry and a bit spicy. Nicely done for a style I generally loathe. Draft at the tap room. Not sure how I missed this tapping. Anyway, pours a clear gold with a persistent white head, maybe a hint of haze? Nose is quite fruity, some banana and citrus, along with white pepper. Low pilner malt aroma. Low hops. On tasting, it is quite bitter. Between alcohol bitterness and hop bitterness, it’s too much. Good fruity yeast character limiting the phenols. Nice enough but far to bitter with a sweet finish.
