The Latin name for hops is Humulus Lupulus, and when we decided to brew an ultra hoppy Double IPA to celebrate the brewerys anniversary, Humulus Ludicrous was born. Pale two-row, crystal and Munich malts form the firm malt base with thick, nutty flavours. We add a stupid amount of Centennial and Cascade hops during the brewing process and finish with running the sweet hot wort though a hopback (stuffed with more hops) on its way to the fermenting vessel. But, were not done yet! Three separate dryhop additions take place as we move the brew through to the aging tanks. The result is a beer with unrivalled grapefruit and orange rind aromas with a bittersweet malt finish. 100 IBU As seen in "Worlds Best Beers" Ben McFarland, and "1001 Beers You Must Taste Before You Die" by Adrian Tierney-Jones.

Sampled at the GCBF. Amber, spiderwebs. Aroma of mango, tangerine, apricot. Taste is bitter, yes, but the crystal comes out mightily. A well crafted DIPA... Id heard this was overhopped but its not too bitter at all, its "well balanced" (which is almost absurd to say for this most extreme of styles) with the malt base.

I havent had Humulus Ludicrous in 3 or more years and this year Half Pints brought it back to their new taproom. It was delicious, a citrusy, grapefruit and piney Double IPA that was actually too easy to drink. This years batch certainly wasnt as harsh yet still full on flavour on bitterness as most years, which I liked.

Dark amber pour with some nice tan head. Aromas are citrus and grapefruit. Taste is also grapefruit but tastes more tropical. Taste is nicely balanced. Dry hoppy finish. Amazing DIPA

Rating #1274 - 12 oz on draught at Beer Revolution 8.5%. Pours a darker amber, with a bubbly tan head. Aroma is citrusy, grapefruit hops predominant. Taste is extremely hoppy, lots of cool citrus notes - mild tropical, mild pine, mild orange zest. Extraordinarily balanced - the sweet met with doses of bitterness, and they all linger into the finish. Superbly done.

Bottle: Dark, brownish-amber with a small, off-white head. Orange, spicy, lactic scent. Taste is creamy, orange malt, resin, berry....a little breadheel. Very fruity...sweet....solid pine/peel hopping.... Really good....big hopping, but not just a tossed together bomb.

Bottle. Lactic orange malt and pine/grapefruit peel aroma. Hazy amber with large off white head. Sweet ripe orange malt and strongly bitter grapefruit peel flavor. Nice body.

Bottle thanks to VanJamer, thanks Jamie! Pours a hazy copper with a thin creamy white head that sticks to the side of the glass nicely. Nose is of piny hops, resinous. There is also some slight caramel in the background. Taste is more bitter than sweet but still very well-balanced to me. Flavors of fruity hops, caramel and resin. Finish is slightly herbal and bitter. Body is medium and carbonation medium-high and drying. Overall a nice double IPA, Id drink that again (in a smaller bottle, hopefully).

Deep copper amber, with small white head. Leaves some lacing. Aroma is pine, resin and slight citrus. Taste is rich caramel, molasses, some maltiness. Finishes with a long, astringent bitterness. Full bodied, soft carbonation. Excellent.

Tap. Orange Amber, offwhite lace. Nice broad fruity and perfumed hops, grassy and light resiny on the palate. Medium body, light oily mouthfeel. Pine aftertaste. Nice, extreme but balanced.

Pours clear pale amber with two fingers dense beige head (that doubles in size after the pour becoming a marshmallow) and great retention, heavy lacing. Nose is moderately intense citrus and piney hops with light pale malt in the background. Taste starts moderately sweet, giving way rapidly to intense bitter. Medium body with moderate sustained carbonation and a lingering spicy bitter finish. Ludicrous is a good name for this beer. The head, the nose, and the finish might all be described as such. This is not a beer that believes in hiding its light under a bushel. I like it! The flavour of the Centennial and Cascade hops comes through loud and clear, and despite the colour and the initial nose, the pale malt plays very much a supporting role, rather than coming to the forefront. I like precisely this balance in a DIPA. An excellent choice to hold its own against spicy foods.
