As spring approaches, a brewer’s thoughts turn to the German tradition: Bock beer. Our Weizenbock welcomes the warmer weather with no less than seven different malts from around the world. The addition of German Perle and Hallertau hops balance the thick malt flavours with pepper and herbal aromas. Specially selected wheat yeast cultures lend banana, vanilla, and clove-like aromas to the beer. Try it with a thick, buttered slice of Tall Grass Prairie Bread Company’s multi grain bread or a decadent Hazelnut Torte. Serve at 8 C. in a tall Weizen glass. 18 IBU. Unfiltered.

Huge thanks to Oakbluff for this one Half Pints Weizenbock 22 oz bomber Brewed spring 07, enjoyed 08/07. Moderate pour in a shaker. Poured a murky brown with a moderate somewhat diminishing fizzy beige head. Smelt of moderate cloves, raisins, figs, bananas, cinnamon. Taste was upfront strong bitter sweet caramel, dried fruit (figs) followed by a strong bitter pungent mushroomy yeast and a kick of cinnamon and cloves spices and some moderate sweet caramel on a long finish. Palate was light to medium bodied, watery, fizzy, and lightly astringent. Overall, this is a great weizen bock. Lots of strong flavours, very intense, bold and complex. Palate was a little dull and effervescent, but the rest is amazing. Good stuff!

Thanks to savvy1982 for the share. Pours a light amber with almost no head. Aroma is slightly oxidized with sweet malt, cherries, port, caramel, and berries on the nose. The flavor is a little lost. A little cardboard showing, with cherries and plums. Time has not treated this beer overly well, but it was still enjoyable.

Bottle, a thousand thanks to Dave at Half Pints for this rare oldie. Pours orange/amber, with very little head, no lacing to speak of. This beer shows it’s age, oxidation is clearly present, but this beer still has some love to give...Nose is leather, soft toffee, red fruit, oxidized but still interesting. Flavor is very soft, shows the age far moreso than the nose, things here are beginning to fall apart, leather, prunes, extremely soft carbonation. Likely a work of art in it’s prime, still quite drinkable now.

clear dark brown. Light malty aroma. It smells a little funky. Like a mild paint smell. Tastes alright banana and a light malty flavour very low in carbonation. The bottle has taken its toll on this beer, it tastes good but i I bet of was much better when it was fresh.

Thanks to HogTownHarry. Appearance: Deep red, medium white head, no visible carbonation. Aroma: Fresh grass, tea, corn, hops, pepper, slight alcohol and spices. Flavour: Malt, pepper ’bacon’, herbs, banana, yeast and flowers.

Deep bronze in colour with a lingering thin tan head, light lacing. The aroma is very caramely, high sugary sweetness, some dark fruits, lots of malt, some chocolate. The flavour is lightly bitter, some orange citrus, light caramel sweetness, chalky. Lightly sweet mouthfeel, medium/lght body, medium carbonation. Finishes with a moderate bitterness, light chocolate.

This had an unbelievable aroma but after that it sort of loses track and takes another direction. The aroma and flavour are 2 different beers.

660ml bottle obtained in a trade with piscator34, thanks Kris.

341ml bottle. Mild fruity esters, dried wood, green pepper and some grassy hops on the nose. Pours a dark copper/amber with a lasting white head. Flavor is heavy on the toasted malt and surprisingly light on the esters. Wheat toast, very faint banana, dried leaves... I can see how this would pair nicely with a slice of multi grain bread. Medium bodied with a dry toasty finish. Thanks Scott!

341ml bottle. So sad to see the ol’ bombers go out the door.
Nice hazy brown beer with a small tan head with some staying power. Aroma is very complex. Banana, clove, pepper, sugar, yeast. Phenomenal. Light feel with a biscuity malt, spicy hop flavour and small bitterness in the finish that carries over after. Well balanced. Refreshing. Makes you want summer to arrive that much more.

thepegjett (1281) - Cambridge (via Winnipeg), Cambridgeshire, ENGLAND - MAR 13, 2008
Very complex aroma with carmel and the sweet classic wheat beer scent. Cloudy red color, with a sweet and bitter flavor. Is a cross between a Hoengardeen and a red ale. I like it.

[998-20071223] 660mL (w/ GregClow, jerc). Boozy roasted malt aroma with a bit of wheat. Slightly cloudy, red body with a quick foamy off-white head. Fruity boozy wheat flavour base has a bit of heather floral. Medium body. Mild, not bad but would want to re-rate a fresher sample.

UPDATED: DEC 27, 2007 Bottle shared with jerc & mabel - my bottle via trade with piscator34. Ruby-copper colour with a wispy head. Aroma is mellow and warm, with some spice/clove and caramel notes. Medium body. Flavour is mild, with some sweet dark fruit and subdued spice. All of the elements were enjoyable, but it felt sort of muted to me. (Although to be fair, it should be noted that it was about 9 months past the bottling date when I drank it.)
