COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Historically from Germany, this Schwarzbier (or Black Beer) is a real act of balance. On the one hand the chocolate aromas are sweet, yet theyre also a bit bitter with a sniff of roasted coffee and a sneaky spicy noble hop. The colour is dark yet ruby red under the light. The roasted malts surprise with their smoothness in your mouth and the bittersweet chocolate is right there until it dries out slowly at the end. In the equilibrium, this dark beer is deceptively light.

330ml bottle thanks to Cam & Marita. Small creamy light beige good lacing mostly lasting head, thick dark brown/black hue with a wonderful ruby tiny. Full of a complex array of pleasant aromas - strong coco, roasted slightly burnt malt, Irish cream, vanilla, licorice, kelp, soy sauce, whisky, blackberry - yum, there are also other nice aromas there that I cant describe. Quite bitter but enough sweet to avoid the bitterness dominating, faint salinity. Medium body creamy oily texture soft carbonation sticky then eventually slightly peppery finish. Thoroughly enjoyable, probably the nicest Schwarzbier I have had so far.

[8211-20160509] Tap. Roasted grains and woody leaves aroma. Clear, reddy cola black body with a quick foamy off-white head. Roasted grainy malt and light woody leaf flavour. Medium body. Good, and from this day forward, I shall pronounce "schwarzbier" as the Kiwis do: using a delightfully amusing lilt. (7/3/7/3/14) 3.4

2016-05-09. Black body with a modest beige head.3+ Aroma is slightly tangy, dusty toasty malt and cocoa, mild dark malt. 6++ Flavour is similar, lightly dusty cocoa and dark malt, a mild underlying tang detracts for me. 6++ Smooth average to light bodied palate, soft carbonation. 3+ Decent but not to my taste. 6/3-4/6/3/12-13 On tap at Hallertau Brewbar, Auckland, NZ.

Restrained aroma in a coke coloured pour. Smooth roasted coffee chocolate taste is interesting rather than exceptional (and is definitely better than the double strength fresh hopped version).

Draft at the source. Very dark brown color, beige edge head. Aroma of unsweetened cocoa, coffee, dark fruit. Taste is coffee and subtle fruit. Light body. Tasty.

Nice one. One of the better Ive had from Hallertau. This has really piqued my interest in the dark side. In my limited experience, it is rare for the thaste to be like the description, but in this case, it was pretty much right on. Easy drinking.

A Schwarzbier for Saint Pats, well that is how I role anyways!
This one settles with a limp and lax beige pad atop a deepest ruby brown body. Pickd up quite a lot of charred red wood on the nose giving it a richness atop hints of burnt peanuts, brine, cola beer, fresh strapped leather and peppery spice. Bitter and sharp burnt malt gives it a tongue-spasming astringency that is initially hard to shake off. Otherwise it is light, delicate even and expresses a gentle milk chocolate, cola-like malt profile and late hit of dusty, herbal hops. Dry, powdery, smoky length otherwise short for flavour. It slowly grew on me, as I took in the bitter charred-ness of it. Quite clean cut and easy to drink. Not too shabby!! 33cL, BBE 04/13, Cellarbrations Carlisle)

Unlike the others 1,2 and 3 there is no earthy aroma in this B=but there is chocolate there. and that carries somewhat into the taste. but it isnt strong, but it is dominant. This is an altogether better beer than 1,2 or 3. Much more enjoyable. However and but.... its thin and without length I do prefer this to those, and its what Id pick from the bar
