Just tapped at the brewery’s taproom. Sampled on draught, pours a semi-hazy orange brown colored brew with a creamy off-white head that slowly dissipated and leaves behind some excellent lacing. Aroma is smoked pork jerky, some traces of apple or beachwood, and some west coast-calber citrusy hops. Taste is full bodied, average carbonation with flavors of smoked pork jerky, light apple, grapefruit, and a touch of earthy spice. Finish has a medium hop aftertaste that lasts a little longer than the smoked malt flavor. An Americanized hopped smoked brown ale with German malt/yeast ingredients is best way to describe this special test release.
Draft at Republic. Hazy amber in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of sweet wood smoke and bready malt. Loads of smoke on the palate along with chewy malts, caramel, and mild orchard fruit. Sampled from the tap at Happy Gnome. Pours a clear deep orange gold with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a sweet smoke with sweet grains and a bit of pork backing. 4 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s taproom in Lino Lakes, Minnesota. Consumed on 10-13-15. Pours a hazy amber with beige head. Nice color. Smoky, malty aroma features scents of caramel, campfire, Caol Ila Scotch. Slightly chemical smell. Really nice, complex flavor exceeds the aroma in complexity. Barbecued vegan hot dog flavor. Links, Chicago tap: pours murky brown with a white head. Aroma is ham and smoke. There is also a hint of booze and wood. Taste is moderately smoky... Really not as smoky as some other rauches. Malty backbone. With light german style hops making a little appearance. Mellow smoked.

Keg @ ABR 2015. Deep orange body with a large white head. Nose is full of expressive smoke aromas. Plenty of smoked ham, brown sugar. Some caramelized tree branch. Grain. Taste is nicely balanced. Draft at Holy Grale (back in Feb 2015). Head is mostly diminishing. Body is medium to dark yellow. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (caramel, malt syrup), lightly to moderately yeasty (dough), with notes of smoke, taffy, plastic. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, syrupy/watery texture, lively/soft carbonation.
Despite this brewery being pretty popular in Louisville, I never did find any samples that were better than average...and this highly recommended (by Holy Grale staff) brew is no exception. Strong vitamin B stink kinda ruins the nose, and it’s syrupy sweet in the mouth. Could only drink a few ounces before dumping the rest of the glass out. It’s doubly sad since this brewery is not only heavy metal themed but also influenced by (and taught by) a fave brewery of my own, Haandbryggeriet. As with Jester King, though, I’m left underwhelmed by the beer quality from these metalheads (all due respect of course). Tao. Aroma of smoke and taste is sweet. Reminds me of maple bacon. Not over powering.
