(Belgian Caramel Apple)
Hangar 24s second Anniversary Ale marked our first attempt at a Belgian-Style beer. This type of beer requires special yeast that provides interesting spicy flavors and aromas. We used fresh-pressed apple cider from Los Rios Apples in Oak Glen and combined it with carmelized sugar made for us by a local culinary school. The combination of yeast, apple and caramel (along with some malt and hops) created unique flavors of clove spice, bready apple pie and a sweet, fruity finish.

Growler Hazy yellow ale with a small, fizzy, white head. The nose bestows apples, very light clove and whispers of caramel and banana. Full-bodied with an oily mouthfeel and gentle carbonation. The flavor is balanced and moderately acidic. Reminiscent of the aroma, the flavor awards caramel, mild clove and banana. Low bitterness, but enough to counter the sweetness. Finishes kind of tart, kind of sweet and kind of dry. I kind of like it. Growler courtesy of DuffManSW!

Tap at the brewery. I would have put this in as a cider but who knows. THe description was that it was a fresh pressed cider with Oak Glen [apples?] that was fermented with candi sugar and Belgian yeast. The end product is very odd- like a German hefeweizen and cider mixed together.

It poured a full translucent glowing yellow with a thin white head that did not leave very much lace. Nose was literally smoked ham, honey baked ham, some smoked malt character, small amount of Belgian yeast and hefeweizen spices poking through the ham. Taste was pretty much all hefeweizen with a cider tartness and sugary sweetness. Really weird.

Sampled at a big tasting in the Holiday Inn in Schererville the night before Dark Lord Day- thanks to everybody for their generosity! Pours a cloudy yellow-gold with a small bone white head. Aroma of apples, caramel malts, brown sugar, and spices. Flavor was pretty similar, with apple tartness and acidity, caramel and sugary sweetness, mild spice, and bready, fruity yeast. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation. Sweet mouthfeel. Pretty interesting beer.

12/18/10. Shared by fata2683 - thanks, Keith! Aroma and flavor are of sweet banana, Belgian yeast, and mild fruitiness. Cant say I got huge amounts of apple or apple pie, but definitely fruity and Belgian.

Sample at Stone 14th Anniversary. Hazy dark gold pour, frothy white head. Sweet bready malts, caramel, crisp apples, banana, belgian yeast, honey, and light spice. This is very nice, and aptly described.

Goblet pour @ Blue Palms on the Monday after their 2nd anniversary party. Had no idea what I was going to get out of this beer but the name was intriguing enough and I had never heard of the brewery before. Color is hazy golden and the beer has a sticky lacing. Aroma is alcohol barrel, very sweet on residual sugars, and sticky smelling (sweetness again). Flavor is sweet alcohol with lots of sweet Belgian characteristics. Not at all a bade beer but a bit sweet and alcoholic for me. I could feel the alcohol evaporating off my tongue, which actually created an interesting taste sensation and mouthfeel.

growler from fata 3/6/11. vibrant pour.... golden with a big white head. remarkably apple filled aroma!... along with yeast and its spiciness, a touch of fruity tartness, dust, cinnamon, banana notes, mustiness and floral perfume. the flavor is the same only more like a apple filled donut! the body has some heft and stickiness yet remains crisp and easy drinking. 7/4/7/4/16/3.8
