Bottle, thanks to ClubGonzo. A dense, light tan head sits on top of a dark, dark brown body. There’s lots of spruce on the nose, with roasted malts, coffee and some resins. The flavor has a nice little sourness, with spruce and pine cones, and notes of blackcurrant. A bit thinnish on the palate. Foresty, roasted and lightly spiced finish. Certainly an interesting twist on the concept of Christmas beer. 120203 gunnfryd (15490) - Kristiansand, NORWAY - MAY 17, 2012

330 ml bottle, courtesy of Hanne. Dark brown, almost black body with a thin, beige head. Aroma of dark malt, softwoods and pine. Flavor is malty blackcurrant, grapefruit, sweet malt and fruity bitterness. Quite unusually and original in flavor, strange but I somehow enjoyed this one. 0.33l bottle @ Hanne På Høyden, Bergen. This yuleale pours a near black body. If you hold it against a light you can see some brown hints on the sides, but this is what I call a black one. It also has a head, and a quite nice light brown one actually, but it faded completetely after like 15 seconds. The aroma is really chalky and "dry". It has hints of chocolate paper, sour lingonberries and something best describes as old-man-shooes. Not to Christmasy. The flavor; My lord that tastes wierd! Herbal spruce-infused skogsbær and strawberry yogurt! It really really tastes like a yogurt gone wild! Expected lots of roasted malts and perhaps even some chocolate here based on the looks, but it’s just yogurt yogurt yogurt! What a strange experience. What da heck did she put in this one?! Still, I managed the whole bottle, and I guess you can say it kinda grows on (and in) you after a while. 19.01.2012 Geokkjer (7663) - Kristiansand, NORWAY - FEB 3, 2012

Sample from bottle at VANØ Bergen’s Christmas beer tasting 2011 @ Hanne På Høyden. Pours a near-black deep brown body with no head. Nose is faint licorice, mustard, herbs and hints of roasty nuts and dark malts. Medium palate, but slightly low on carbonation which makes the beer suffer a bit. Strange - on the verge of "weird" - but pretty OK nevertheless. And definitely original. :-)
