Abbey-style Quadrupel Aged in Virginia Bourbon Barrels
Hardywood Bourbon Cru is brewed in the fashion of the abbey quadrupel, the grand cru of many of Belgiums revered monastic breweries. Bourbon Cru displays a sunset orange hue with a substantial head and brilliant clarity after months of barrel ageing. The maturity and melding of flavors brought on by the freshly drained, half-decade old Virginia bourbon barrels from Fredericksburgs A. Smith Bowman Distillery lends an extraordinary sense of harmony to Bourbon Cru. Almond toffee and oaky vanilla aromatics give way to dark cherries, raisins and mature whiskey. A bit of plum flavor is greeted by caramel overtones and an assertive yet incredibly rounded body and a lingering, bourbon-laced finish.

750 ml, caged and corked bottle. Drank one of my last bottles of this last night. The bourbon is the first thing I notice in the aroma with hints of caramel, molasses and toffee and a slight hint of vanilla. This beer has a nice warmth from the alcohol and the vanilla comes through more in the flavor than the aroma. An almost full bodied beer in terms of the mouthfeel with a nice lasting finish. Very fortunate to have this brewery in my backyard!

Whiskey aromas and some toffee and slightly sour fruit. Vanilla. Lots of warm alcohol notes, dark berry, vanilla and raisin. The refined quad and the 12%ABV push back against the heavy richness of the bourbon aging in a unique way. Its very effective at balancing the palate, and its delicious, too.

Bottle courtesy of Craig (cheers Craig!) had this at Fairports Annual Reunion Festival, Cropredy Saturday 13th August 2016 Soft in the mouth, really warning, there is a nice carbonation to this , dangerously drinkable. Toffee and caramel and a little nuttiness, chewy and fruity there is also a little spice, its quite good. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.6

Tap. Dark hazy cola brown. Candied fig, simple syrup, dark fruit, vanilla and a lot of sweeter notes in the aroma. Flavor is too sweet for me, even for the style, coconut butter, dark rum raisin, and falls sorta flat and sweet in the finish. Medium flat body.

Bottle, brought in by a customer. Pours a clear, headless deep amber beer. It looks like young wort. Aroma has loads of bourbon and vanilla in there, some red fruits, hint of caramel. Flavor is sweet, but not too overpowering, defintely some booze in there, some oaky touches. A bit of a nutty touch in the end. Aftertaste is long, sweet but not so sticky. A nice example of the style, but maybe a bit too young.
