Abbey-style Quadrupel Aged in Virginia Bourbon Barrels
Hardywood Bourbon Cru is brewed in the fashion of the abbey quadrupel, the grand cru of many of Belgium’s revered monastic breweries. Bourbon Cru displays a sunset orange hue with a substantial head and brilliant clarity after months of barrel ageing. The maturity and melding of flavors brought on by the freshly drained, half-decade old Virginia bourbon barrels from Fredericksburg’s A. Smith Bowman Distillery lends an extraordinary sense of harmony to Bourbon Cru. Almond toffee and oaky vanilla aromatics give way to dark cherries, raisins and mature whiskey. A bit of plum flavor is greeted by caramel overtones and an assertive yet incredibly rounded body and a lingering, bourbon-laced finish.

750 ml, caged and corked bottle. Drank one of my last bottles of this last night. The bourbon is the first thing I notice in the aroma with hints of caramel, molasses and toffee and a slight hint of vanilla. This beer has a nice warmth from the alcohol and the vanilla comes through more in the flavor than the aroma. An almost full bodied beer in terms of the mouthfeel with a nice lasting finish. Very fortunate to have this brewery in my backyard!

Bottle. Pours a clear amber body with a small fizzy beige head that faded pretty quickly. The nose is heavy dark fruits with some Belgian yeast esters, some moderate bourbon barrel notes, alcohol vapors, and lots of caramel. The flavor is pretty well balanced between the barrel and the base beer. Very very sweet with lots of dark fruits of plum and fig. Pretty noticeable alcohol on the finish. It's pretty full bodied and chewy with moderate fizzy carbonation, yet somehow finishes a bit thinner than expected. I think maybe due to the high abv. Pretty decent Quad, but I wouldn't trade a Westy or Rochefort for it ever.

I thought I was done with beer after college. Hardywood and a few other craft brewerys have changed my mind. I only drink if its good win or great beer. Hardwood bourcon Cru cleared that bar by a good distance. It is without question the smoothest ale Ive ever had. The finish in particular--nothing nasty, tart or harsh about the finish. In fact, that is one of it's biggest selling points. A finish that is sophisticated, and makes you want to handg onto the taste for an hour -not a few seconds. Extraordinary. I like the Gingerbread Bouirbon barrel --a bit too sweet for me. They have tried wine barrels and rum with pumpkin. However--this is THE only ale I want to drink when the food is right and the company too. soft carbonation, smooth finish, soft carbonation, creamy, medium body,

Keg at Brewdog Soho. A clear nut brown coloured pour with a lasting fine beige head. Aroma is vanilla, rough oak, toasted brown sugars, cakey malts. Raisin loaf.. Flavour is composed of semi sweet, brown sugars, woody, bark, dried raisin, vanilla oak and spicy woody. Lingering oak tannin. Palate is semi sweet, little thin, medium bodied, spicy finish. Moderate to high carbonation. Lingering hot alcohol. Disappointed.

Keg at BrewDog Soho. Nice, but a bit too much coconut sweetness, and also the booze is a little heavy.
