Gingerbread Stout Aged in Virginia Bourbon Barrels
Hardywood Gingerbread Stout, described by BeerAdvocate as freagin Christmas in a bottle, is an imperial milk stout brewed with vanilla beans, cinnamon, fresh Casselmonte Farm baby ginger and Bearer Farms wildflower honey. Gingerbread Stout is then matured in Virginia bourbon barrels, where it adapts an incredibly mellow character with oak, caramel and bourbon undertones, and emerges 12 weeks later as Bourbon GBS. A festive blend of spice character laces this rich, chocolatey stout, which warms the palate and the soul.

750ml bottle pours dark brown black with a finger of tan head. Nose and tast have lots of spice, of course, pretty good level of chocolately roast and cocoa to back up the spice. nice creamy mouthfeel, bits of vanilla, ginger, cinnamon. Dont really get much in the way of bourbon or oak barrel character from the beer other than perhaps a bit more nutty vanilla on the finish, not substantially different than regular GBS.

Thanks Huhzubendah for sharing the bottle! Poured into a taster showing thick translucent coffee rims with a pitch black center and a finger of latte colored foam. The nose shows a strong gingerbread forwardness upon a moderately intense bourbon background. The palate is medium bodied and moderately carbonated. Gingerbread forward flavors with gingerbread spices of cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg with a caramel finish. Moderate ginger spiciness throughout the beer. Surprisingly little bourbon barrel influence.

Hardywood continues to impress with barrel aging. This barrel aged version of Gingerbread Stout is complex, its spinning a lot of plates at once. But it doesnt drop a single one, and the show is glorious. This beer pours big and brown with average head. The aroma is just a series of clamoring nosegasms. Everything you might think could possibly be there is there in spades, with vanilla and ginger and spice and raisins all blending perfectly into that delicious stout malt base. The flavor manages to pack it all in there, keep the tones bright and distinct, and not lose a bit of it. This aint noise. This is music. At once there is a rush of bourbon barrel aging, cinnamon, candied fruit, candied nuts, and big, sweet malt. It never gets old. It never becomes cloying. Its crazy. I am so completely Hardywoods bitch right now, and if anyone gave me shit about it, Id point to beers like this. If I ever have another child, Im naming that kid Hardywood.

Bottle thanks to Bruce. Pours a black color with a solid tan head. Thinner than the apple brandy GBS. Cinnamon and gingerbread chocolate. Long toasty finish.

Aromas of ginger, vanilla, caramel, zesty. Brown black with a fairly lasting beige head. A nice balance of sweet and dry, spicy, kind of tastes like Italian custard. Full bodied.

Bottle thanks to Cliff, this one ive wanted to try, the bourbon really mutes a lot of the adjuncts. I dont like adjuncts in a beer, and I dont know why I get upset when I dont taste them. It must me that it takes me back to college in my dogfish head days when all these crazy claims on beer and its just bitter and sweet. I never tasted the adjuncts and it annoyed me. Well this is the same, the base is your average stout, and the bourbon influence is light.
