Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and uninhibited, Hardywood Singel is a feat in balance. Sunshine golden with a fluffy head and a veil of Belgian ale yeast, Singel’s tropical fruit esters complement its spicy hop aromatics. Delicate in body, Singel’s mellow, dry finish culminates a truly ethereal experience. Hardywood Singel’s stylistic inspiration originates with the Trappist brewers of western Europe, who are often celebrated for their gloriously complex dubbels and tripels, and whose devotion to crafting heavenly libations is second to none. Unknown to many, some of the Trappist brewers also brew a milder ale for daily consumption within the walls of the monastery. Hardywood Singel is our interpretation of this style.

Rated 4/2/13. 750ml bottle into a Duvel tulip. A: Pours a hazy golden color. The head is a two finger white shade. It doesn’t have the thick-looking richness or great retention I expect from a BPA; otherwise the general look is fine. S: About what I expected - apple, pear, grape, bread, and noble hops to balance. No single note here is impressive, but it coalesces together admirably. T: Initial fruity tones of citrus, apple, and grape eventually build to an earthy hop tone. Additional grape flavors linger on the aftertaste pleasantly. It makes up for its modicum of depth with its rock-solid balance and easy drinking nature. M: The texture is fairly light - a great combination with the crisp, dry nature of the finish. Only thing to really complain about is that carbonation is a touch too high. O: This one doesn’t impress at first...until you realize that 2/3rds of the bottle was finished in about 10 minutes. The focus on pleasant subtlety over chest-thumping aggressiveness is something I can really appreciate here.

Ziemlich hell, kaum Perlung. In der Nase Orange, belgisch-wit'ig. Im Trunk tatsächlich sehr wie ein Wit, aber weniger Süße. Orange, Malz, dann leicht bitter. Sehr bekömmlich.

12 oz bottle from Virginia. Poured golden amber; Clear with a good white head. This could result pitas for a true Belgian despite the U.S. origin. It has lots of flavor and aromas from the Belgian yeast including banana, clove, nutmeg and wood. Some hop spicing including white pepper. Complex.

Keg at Brewdog Shepherds Bush, London. A golden/orange coloured pour with a healthy white head on top. Fruity, yeasty, spice aroma. Tastes quite similar, fruity, banana, yeasty, spice, quite Belgian but not a great deal happening in this one.

Keg at BD down Shep, 28/07/17. Golden blonde with an impressive off white head. Nose is pale malts, bread dough, light spice, straw, faint citric drizzle. Taste comprises light orange, spice, apricot, bread dough, yeast flicker, caramel. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Nothing offensive here just a bit of a fresh air beer that offered me little in terms of depth and flavor.
