West Coast Style IPA. Bold, resinous and bursting with bright grapefruit aroma, this IPA is a tribute to the decades of hard work by conservationists to restore the James River as a bounty of vibrant aquatic life, eco-friendly recreational activity, and in our case, fresh brewing water. These efforts have culminated recently with the symbolic return of the endangered Atlantic sturgeon, a prehistoric, yet majestic behemoth of a fish, spotted as far up the James River as the fall line in Richmond. Your purchase of this beer supports the James River Association. Thank you for being a part of The Great Return. In our commitment to James River conservation, Hardywood will contribute $10 per barrel of The Great Return to The James River Association, to support their mission to be the guardian of the James River. The JRA’s core programs include Watershed Restoration, Education and Outreach, River Advocacy and the Riverkeeper Program.

UPDATED: AUG 10, 2016 Draft at Misconduct. Slight hazy gold pour. No lasting head or lace. Glossy shortbread. Honey orange. Peach. Apricot. Lemongrass. Green orange grapefruit pith. Browned lemons bagels. Juicy phenols. Celery hearts. Bold. Fuzzy sharp. Disappointing but worth a shot.

Draft at Yard House-Springfield. Hazy medium golden body, small soft head, tons of lacing. Hops first on the nose, followed by minor citrus notes. Taste pushes the citrus up closer to the front, hops close it out with a short, sharp bite.

Poured into half yard at Yards a nice orange Amber with dense white head. Aroma of light citrus and some malt, nice balance there. Taste was bright grapefruit. Nice easy drinker.

What Hardywood does really well is malty beers... barrel aged stouts and quads. But this IPA is very good, too. It pours light brown to amber with lot of foam and lace. The aroma is pine resin and bitter citrus. The flavor is light at the front but finishes with a sight candied fig quality and finally a big, hoppy flood. I’ll have this again. I enjoyed it.

JBPortland (1647) - Hampton Roads, Virginia, USA - MAR 3, 2016
16oz can pours clear toasted orange with 2 finger head. Nose is floral citrus, honey, toast, orange, light pine. Taste is well balanced with medium high bitterness, assertive but clean malt presence of toasted grain and honey, hints of orange sweetness with bright floral hops, some peach notes. Finishes bitter, lingering citrus, toast, grain, orange, floral, soft pine. Enjoyed this.

Pours a clear golden orange on tap with fluffy white head that dissipates to leave moderate lace. Aroma of resinous west coast hops, puberty and earthy, with a hint of biscuit malt. Taste is bigger, bitterness throughout, but nice hop character. Not bad, but honestly nothing fantastic.

In a 16oz can. Booming aroma of pine resin. Thick, sticky, glistening lace. Flavors are super-robust: Lots of grapefruit and orange with a hint of toffee and caramel. Finishes with some grapefruit zest and cleanly. An absolute winner.

Pours a light amber color with a lacy white head. Nose is citrus rind and fresh malt taste is mostly bitter pith. Nice.
