ABOUT Rauchfetzen
Brew Date: 10/17/08
Packaging Date: 10/31/08

Harpoon Rauchfetzen is the 25th offering from our 100 Barrel Series. We used beechwood smoked malt from Bamberg, Germany to craft this copper-colored ale that evokes Rauchfetzen, a poetic German word meaning “wisp of smoke.” While many smoked beers are heavy on the pallet, this beer allows the character of the smoked malt to play off the herbal bitterness of Hallertau hops and the fresh, bread-like quality of Munich and Pilsner malts. Enjoy this beer with a variety of cheeses and sausages.

nuplastikk (6373) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - MAR 21, 2009
UPDATED: MAR 22, 2009 22oz bottle shared with argoO and crew. Deep smoky aroma. Orange-tan color, minimal head. All out smoky taste, true to style. Hops come through with some crispness to counterbalance the all out smoked malt taste. A touch more bitter than your typical Rauch, almost a touch spicy.

bu11zeye (13029) - Frisco (Dallas), Texas, USA - MAR 21, 2009
(22oz. bottle) Pours a clear golden body with a small white head. Aroma of toasted grain, light smoke, metallic, and rye. Flavor of soap, metallic, light smoke, caramel malt, and dough.

SamGamgee (2452) - down the whirlpool, California, USA - MAR 16, 2009
22oz bottle shared by argo0. Dark, slightly burnt gold color with a creamy white head. Smokey and grainy aromas with some bacon and grain husk qualities. Sweet caramel malt flavors with a smokey finish, and a moderately bitter hop snap. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Nicely malty and smokey bit just a bit on the sweet side

argo0 (14127) - Washington DC, USA - MAR 14, 2009
(22oz bottle) Small white head atop clear apple juice body. Aroma is medium sweet, some bread, smoke, light mint. Taste is moderately sweet, bread, some caramel, light herb. Finishes with some meatish smoke. Light-medium body, light stickiness.

joeyplush (648) - Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 13, 2009
Lightly smoky aroma with a slight hoppiness. Orange hazy color with a medium head and light lacing. Taste of smoked sausage, and a citrusy hoppy taste with some hoppy bitterness in the finish. This beer is not too smoky, in some ways it’s not smoky enough.

CaptainCougar (7133) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - MAR 13, 2009
Pours a transparent deep golden amber with a thin, wispy-lacing white head. Aroma of rich sweet smoky caramel German malt with a hint of light fruits. Starts with decent fullness and sweet caramel with nice smoky flavor and a smooth noble bittering hop balance. A pretty true to style and drinkable brew, but could use a little more body.

travita (5006) - Dallas, Texas, USA - MAR 11, 2009
Bottle thanks to bullzeye. The smell is smokey, spices, leather, malts, and hops. The look is golden in color with a thinner white head. The taste is spices, malts, some smoke, and a light bitterness.

DocLock (10841) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 10, 2009
Pours turbid orangy coppery with 1-finger creamy white head. Nose is grainy, smoky pale malt, hops, orangy citrus, and smoked sausage. Tastes ruachy, caramel malty, with toffee, some sweetness, and some figgy fruity notes late. Not terribly complex, but suitable with a pork or sausage dish.

jkwalking05 (4743) - Arlington, Texas, USA - MAR 7, 2009
Bottle thanks to bullzeye. Orange and hazy with a decent off-white head. Aroma is of light smoke, malt, and rye. Taste is the same with some caramel and a little fruit.

BMan1113VR (7930) - Los Angeles, California, USA - MAR 7, 2009
Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. I must preface by declaring my self not a fan of smoked beers. Pours with a small white head over a hazy gold body. Aroma of smoke, sanitizer, banana, rabbit droppings, alfalfa, kitty litter and rye. Taste is smoke, banana, and reminds me of a rabbit run. Light bubbles and watery.
