The appearance had a pitch black colored body with a one finger foamy off white head, the head dies after about a good thirty seconds, a moderate amount of sporadic light clingy lacing appears and eventually spider webs.
The smell had light roasted malts with an ever so light amount of hops.
The taste had a smooth roastiness with some hops trying to make their presence, but really stay subdued, roasty aftertaste, dry sweet finish.
The palate sat about a light to medium, semi-sessionable. Carbonation seems spot on for the style and for me.
Overall, this is almost always a super hard style for me to review, but figured better get ’er done, wishing I would have been more careful with that bottle date that got smudged as it could’ve helped me gauge how old this was. I’d probably have again, but the black & tan style though most of them are lower ABV-ed tend to be more of a sipper for me - could be just be, not sure what it is of these little beasts. smcolw (617) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - JAN 27, 2014
Light beige, moderate head. Deep amber color with a ruby hue. Appears clear. Leaves some streaks of lace, even after the head collapses.
Chocolate and caramel aroma, in a word--sweet.
The taste is closer to baker’s chocolate. This is not sweet on the tongue at all. Strong hop bite makes the finish even more bitter. Bomber into pint. Very dark brown. Lighter malt aroma, almost like a brown ale. In the mouth, it’s like a mullet -- ale up front, stout in back. There’s the slight bitterness of the ale in front, and it transitions to the roast notes of the stout in the end. Pretty light over all. Kind of like a mixed Black & Tan. Dark amber color, small white head. Slightly hoppy, light toasted notes. Medium-bodied. Caramel, some toasted notes. Lingering light bitterness in the aftertaste. A bit conservative.
Bottle @ home, courtesy of a chill trader bro. Pours a clear reddish brown appearance with a creamy, lasting brown head. Roasty chocolate, a touch smoky, caramelized grainy, light coffee aroma. Bottle poured into a snifter. Pours black with minimal head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate with slight woody notes. Taste is light bitter and light sweet. Coffee, chocolate and a bit of wood. bomber - pours dark rub brown with tan head and good lacing. Nose is coffee roast and pine. sip introduces caramel and grapefruit. Hoppier than I expect for the style. Smoky aftertaste. medium to heavy body. Despite the low ratings, I happen to like this one on the account that it’s autumnal without tasting like fruit cake or potpourri. I see myself drinking by a warm fire on the first "cool" nights after summer.
