COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Note, staff at Harpoon brewery said the Black IPA in 12oz bottles and on tap seasonally is not the same as the 100 Barrel series Black IPA. === A specialty malt called Midnight Wheat gives this beer an almost stout-like appearance without the overly roasty attributes often associated with traditional dark malts. Chinook, Simcoe, Cascade, and Citra hops provide a fruity aroma to complement the earthy, spicy bitterness of this dark ale.

Bottle from the Harpoon IPA-mix pack. Pours out a deep russet brown with a light tan head that sticks around a while. Light hoppy and roasty aromas. Flavor is plenty malty with a bitter hop backbone. Not overdone. Quite drinkable with a light sticky bitter finish.

Harpoon Black IPA has a thick, spongy, beige head, a semi-clear, dark, red-brown, bubbly appearance, and heavy lacing left behind. The aroma and flavor are a bit difficult to pin down, but I smelled fairly dark-roasted malt, wheat bread, some citrus, and some very subdued hop oil. Taste is of medium-to-heavy roasted malt char, citrus, mellow hop bitterness (67 IBU?), and bread crust. Mouthfeel is medium, and Harpoon Black IPA finishes dry and mellow. RJT

12oz bottle to tulip. Pours black, scarce tan head. Aroma of raisin, cocoa, black cherry, citrus. Taste of same with nice bitter finish. Mostly citrus, unsweetened chocolate and earth. It?s black and it?s bitter. Not much for hops though. A lot of char.

Cola-colored beer with a late forming medium light tan head. Nose of pine resin, grapefruit pith, and black licorice. Flavor is not nearly as hoppy as the aroma with subdued citrus and pine overlaying some toasted pumpernickel. Some good flavors here, but nothing is particularly pronounced.

Beer of month club. Pours from bottle to glass a cola color with foamy brown head that recedes with lots of lacing. Nose is some citrus and pine but also a soapy quality. Taste is like a fusion of an IPA (grapefruit) and black licorice. It's a little different - worth trying, but can't say this is a beer I will go out of my way for. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12oz bottle into Le Duvel - nose is roast, citrus and bad water. Sip creates a more positive experience with coffee and more coffee. Long hop bitter finish with an upfront dark chocolate bitterness. Brutish and lacking smoothness.

Dark color with an light tan head. Nice hoppy aroma. Taste not as hoppy as expected but a good long-lasting bitter flavor throughout with a nice roasted malt balance. Enjoyable drink

12oz bottle in a tulip. Pours near black with a beige head. Aroma of floral and citrusy hops, lightly roasted and chocolate notes, some dough and bread notes. Flavor the same. Average texture. Not bad for the style.
