COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We’ve been brewing in Boston for 26 years, and have always enjoyed the mix of great beer and good friends that Boston’s pub culture inspires. Hopefully we’ve helped create that combination here at the Brewery as well, but the Irish pub may have been one of the first inspirations, and we wanted to pay tribute to it.

The development of Boston Irish Stout was quite a learning experience as we not only needed to come up with a recipe we liked, but had to learn how to nitrogenate beer on a large scale and package it properly. There were a few bumps in the road as we went along, but thankfully we could always drink our mistakes. Of course, it is also fun to see the tap attached to the bright beer tank (the tank we package out of). We need to sample pints out of the tank prior to packaging because it’s the only sure way to confirm that the beer is going to pour correctly when it is put in the keg. Quality control is a tough job at the brewery!

Description
Boston Irish Stout is a traditional dry Irish stout. Full-bodied but sessionable with a creamy texture (derived from the nitro pour), it combines the roasted character of six malts with delicate Willamette hops.

I had it on tap. It pours black with a tan head and lacing. The aroma is chocolate and coffee. The taste is chocolate, milk, vanilla, and coffee. It’s really smooth and creamy. It’s really tasty and drinkable. This is very good.

Poured into an English pint glass, the appearance was layered as expected - black at the bottom fulfilling the tan to brown three finger-ed middle indicating the nitro pour to flow through as it should and then a soft finger and a half of a level eggshell white color for a head. Glistening lovely stringy yet sliding lace. The aroma had a luscious sweet to roasty blend of milk chocolate, roasted malts, sweet cream and a touch of vanilla at the end. The flavor blended the previously mentioned flavors to boot and had it wrap into the aftertaste and slide into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body. Sorry, Harpoon, I don’t find this to be full bodied. Makes for a great session. ABV felt spot on as the brewer suggests. Overall, practically perfect as an Irish dry stout, watch out Guinness. Except for that body, just seems a touch under. Still, I hope Harpoon does this again next year.

Boston 2017. Une belle robe noire avec une crème en lieu de mousse. Un nez légèrement rôti avec une touche de malt chocolat. La bouche est crémeuse et savoureuse avec des saveurs rappelant un fameux stout de Dublin. J’aime bien.

[2/2/17] Draught at Harpoon Brewery in Boston. Dark brown, creamy beige head. Roast, some chocolate, a bit of coffee, dry, medium-bodied. Decent.

On tap. Like a lot of reviewers, I was struck by how similar this is to Guinness. That’s not a criticism or a lazy review of all dry stouts -- this really does have a aroma, mouthfeel, and taste that’s very reminiscent of the Emerald Isle’s biggest export. Really pleasant; it’s not about to reinvent the wheel, but I’m happy to drink a few pints of this any time.
