Our head brewer at our Windsor brewery homebrewed a batch of chocolate stout for himself after trying the style at a beer dinner and loving it. After several Harpooners tried Scotts batch, we knew that we needed to add this beer to our lineup. It was originally introduced as a limited edition extra in our winter mix pack back in 2008, but it was soon apparent that our drinkers wanted more of this beer (a beer made with chocolatenot too hard to understand!), so we brought it back in 6-packs in 2010.

A chocolate stout is a beer with a noticeable dark chocolate flavor. This flavor is created from the use of darker, more aromatic malt that has been roasted or kilned until it acquires a chocolate color. Harpoon Chocolate Stout is brewed with an abundance of chocolate malt and a touch of chocolate.

You get a good cocoa aroma once the bottle is open. This stout has a sweet dark chocolate and coffee flavor. A good dessert beer with brownies or chocolate cake. This really hit the spot. I would definitely recommend this.

The smell is chocolate and coffee, and the appearance is dark and wonderful. The taste is just too overwhelmingly chocolaty, slight coffee, and too unrefined. The mouth feel is slightly watery. Ill definitely NOT be getting this stout again. And I had such high hopes.

Bottle. Pours black with a thin tan head. Big chocolate aroma with vanilla and light coffee. Flavor of roasted malts, bitter dark chocolate, notes of coffee and had a touch of vanilla with a dry roasty finish.

Transfer from BA review on 4-8-14- Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance The beer pours a deep brown color, bordering on black, with a two finger head of tan colored foam. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a roasted malt smell with a good deal of a milk chocolate smell. Adding to the darker aromas are some aromas of coffee. There are big aromas of a caramel, vanilla, and a cream smell there as well, which overall create a very sweet, milk chocolaty smell. Taste The taste begins with a sweet milk chocolate and caramel flavor with a moderate amount of a roasted flavor. These flavors create a base for the brew remaining relatively constant throughout the taste with the caramel fading ever so slightly but being replaced by a little bit of vanilla sweetness. All while these transitions occur, so too do some more bitter coffee and earthy flavors come to the tongue. With the roast intensifying ever so slightly, and a bit of a grainy flavor coming to the tongue, one is left with a somewhat surprisingly drier, but still robustly darker chocolate flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel The body of the beer is on the average side with a carbonation level that is on the average side as well. A bit of a thicker body and a lower carbonation level may have been slightly more fitting for the style, fitting the darker chocolate and more surprisingly drier roasted flavors of the brew more nicely. Overall A decent chocolate brew that was surprisingly dry in light of its aroma. Nothing too exceptional, but a nice try and a decent choice (in light of its price) for a darker and more drinkable chocolate stout.

terrible terrible beer, Chocolate is overdone much in the manner a child would over-do the herseys syrup if allowed to mix it into milk themselves. Difficult to drink. Chocolate is balanced with vanilla in the way that drinking vanilla extract would balance bakers cocoa. AVOID.

"loads of creamy cocoa and chocolate, which is always nice, back and forth between real and artificial, but its done pretty well. kind of a small stout...this much chocolate would work very vrey well in an imperial, but still works well here. this beer disappeared faster than any in recent memory, so that says something right there. Thanks Lou...a chocolate treat. Quite nice for a mix-pack offering!"

A dark brown stout with a thin mocha head. In aroma, very sweet milk chocolate with vanilla, Nestl quick, nice if a bit cloying. In mouth, dry powdery chocolate malt with light mineral notes, grassy hops, OK. On tap at Best Western Plus Waterbury.

Bottle. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malts and some hints of coffee. Taste is chocolate and coffee. Almost chocolate milk like with some carbonation. A bit thin but smooth. Decent sweet stout.

This beer pours dark brown nearly black and is nearly opaque. Only a little bit of light makes it through at the very edges of the glass. From the pour it produces a one inch beige collar of thick foam. The head hangs on well and makes some thin lacing on the glass. There are strong chocolate and dark roasted malty notes in the aroma. This is a strait forward medium to full bodied beer with a fairly thin texture for the style. It has a simple but very tasty rich dark chocolaty character with some sweetness from the malt as well as loads of roasted/toasted notes. I also get some bitter dark coffee notes that hook up with the light bitterness from the hops.
