Our head brewer at our Windsor brewery homebrewed a batch of chocolate stout for himself after trying the style at a beer dinner and loving it. After several Harpooners tried Scotts batch, we knew that we needed to add this beer to our lineup. It was originally introduced as a limited edition extra in our winter mix pack back in 2008, but it was soon apparent that our drinkers wanted more of this beer (a beer made with chocolatenot too hard to understand!), so we brought it back in 6-packs in 2010.

A chocolate stout is a beer with a noticeable dark chocolate flavor. This flavor is created from the use of darker, more aromatic malt that has been roasted or kilned until it acquires a chocolate color. Harpoon Chocolate Stout is brewed with an abundance of chocolate malt and a touch of chocolate.

Bottle. Black with a quickly dissolving tan head. Chocolate, sundried date and sweetened cocoa butter aroma. Sweet, sugary but slightly dry. Medium body, well-carbonated and bitter, a little dry finish. Ok.

Bottle from Boston. Jet black pour, thick off-white head. Delicious aromas of dark chocolate nibs, espresso, sticky date pudding. Smooth as silk- loved the consistency. Rich and chocolatey till the finish, yet the finish wasn't treacly like some chocolate stouts. A real winner- will look for it again for sure.

Nice pour aroma is bakers chocolate. Sweet chocolate hits you slight bitterness. Milky kind of a one trick pony but chocolate stout is what you get. The chocolate notes in sam Adams and anchor beers have a lot more backbone to them. Kind of artificial. Still a decent drink glad I tried it but theres a lot better stuff out there.

12oz bottle, dark pour, dark chocolate aroma, taste of chocolate malts, slight roasty flavor (I wish it was a little more roasty) but never the less, a good tasting stoudt. Thin feel for a stoudt, but again tasty.

Bottle to taster. Bottle says to enjoy by 03/15/14. Looks good; a mostly opaque dark brownish black with thin beige head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells and tastes of chocolate and mild roast. Solid on the palate. Enjoyable.

12 oz. bottle. Thanks, Joe! Pours black, with a big, bubbly, tan head that fizzles quickly, leaving no lacing. The aroma is immediate dark chocolate, vanilla, and a lot of earthiness. Very sweet, with just a little bitterness through the finish. Light to medium body, syrupy and thin. Overall, this is a relatively well-made beer, but lacks any sort of depth. Drinkable, but, meh...

Tap sample. Poured clear dark brown color with an average frothy tan head that mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate roasted sweet chocolate aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium sweet chocolate flavor with a medium chocolate sweet finish of average duration.

6oz on tap at Keystone in Hyde Park. Big milk chocolate syrup flavor up front. Like the Hersheys type. Its a bit much for me... I prefer those super bitter dark chocolate flavors. Theres also something off in the aroma... Like a rootbeer type aroma. Dark brown color, clear around the edges. Little khaki head, couple dots of lace. Medium body. A little watery for the style. Just a very light hint of chewiness. Kind of reasonably smooth, lighter carbonation. Just a very light bit of sharp texture. And just a light hint of slickness. May be my palate, but tasting more dry overall now. Moderate sweet taste, good moderate bitter too though. I was expecting to get burnt out on sweetness here but its actually a decent balance taste-wise. Overall, a pretty decent chocolate stout. Was a little weird at first, but it grew on me and I ended up enjoying it more than I expected to.

Pours an opaque black on tap with creamy off-white head. Aroma is yes, chocolate with a slight roast. Taste follows, sweet and creamy. Very nicely done.

Key at the brewery. Pours a deep brown, very thin tan head that reduces to the edges. Heavy chocolate aroma, with some toffee, bubblegum and cream. Very chocolatey sweetness, very light roasted bitterness. Bit prickly for a stout, but a nice creamy chocolate aftertaste. Very tasty effort.
