12 oz. bottle. Aroma is citrus and piney. Light copper color, slightly cloudy, with small off-white head that didnt last too long. Taste starts sweet, turns to a good, clean bitter, and finishes with floral notes. Somewhat bitter aftertaste. Medium body with just about the right carbonation. Overall, a good, solid IPA.

12oz bottle. Decent white head with some lacing left on the side of the glass. Just the right amount of carbonation. Floral, grapefruit, and pine on the nose. Really nice piney scent from the hops. The taste is where this beer really comes through. Very smooth and well balanced with a perfect amount of bitterness for an IPA. There is some room for improvement here, but I couldnt tell you where. Very good, one I will buy again.

UPDATED: MAR 9, 2008 Another 2004 Christmas beer. Head was modest and there was lacing. The taste was smooth, with excellemt balance of hops. This is an IPA that you can enjoy at any time. The finish was not bitter but sweet. I would enjoy having another. In March 2008 I purchased a 6-pack. I enjoyed every one of them. The hops and bitterness are well balance. It is more like an APA. The modest alcohol for an IPA also is nice when you having more than one. Great for watching basketball.

Solid IPA. On tap at Bacchus. Pale copper color with a small head. Aroma had a little skunk in it. Besides that good grapefruit and hops. Not overly bitter, but just about right. Good piney hops. Great finish. Enjoyable

Sturdy golden body with a foamy, off white head that settles quickly but leaves some half decent lace behind. Floral, hoppy nose with some nice malt character and hints of sweet fruit. Smells clean and fresh, just like I like my IPAs. Flavor is a bit unrefined. Starts off sweet and malty followed by a sharp hops bitterness that is quickly overwhelmed by a dominant floral palate. Finishes floral and sweet with some bitter hops desperately trying to make an appearance while a nice alcohol note wraps up the package. Overall, reminds me of the refrigerator at a flower shop. Not bad, Id drink it again if it was on tap or available at a friends house.

On tap this brew pours a hazy orange/amber with a very small white head. I was really unimpressed with this IPA, not just for the lack of hops, but also for the overall blandness of this. Very watery taste, slightly spicy hops with a very light bitterness. Living in the pacific NW I have come to expect a bit more from my IPAs.

Clean, refined hoppy nose - not too overpowering but enough to give your tastebuds a heads-up as to whats coming. Perfect golden color with a hint of cloudiness. Nice head that lasts until the glass is emptied. Flavor is pure, clean hops. Medium bodied with a nice soft texture and a (what else?) quick hop finish. This is a New England favorite, found on draft in many a bar round these parts. Its obvious why!

UPDATED: FEB 25, 2005 tap.I really enjoyed this beer cause it wasnt quite as bitter like most IPAs. An amber colored medium bodied beer with real good flavor. Not overally hoppy which would normally give it its extreme bitter taste. A fairly large white head and smelled of citruses. Id give it a try but definatly different from a traditional IPA.

UPDATED: MAR 22, 2005 (12 oz bottle: Obtained in trade with shadey, thanks Shane!) Smells and tastes like a hoppy cream ale. Its mildly sweet and grainy, a bit of vanilla in there, and the moderate nuttiness seems stronger than it is because there isnt much else in the flavor to challenge the nuttiness. Moderately bitter, especially in the finish, but its not a pleasant bitterness. The medium bodied beer has a creamy palate, but the floral hops bite finishes a bit harshly. Medium gold color. Whitish head pours to average size, soon fades to a thin layer, and leaves a decent amount of droopy lacing on the glass. Another subpar east coast IPA.<P>(12 oz bottle: Obtained in trade with slob, thanks Bert!) A second try with this IPA, and Im getting a fair amount of honey sweetness in the nose. Sweet, honey flavor matches the aroma. Grainy, malty flavor. I mentioned a vanilla flavor before, and while Im not sure its vanilla, thats close enough. Compared to the really good IPAs, this beer lacks quality malt, but REALLY lacks quality hops. This is like your average brewpub beer, or maybe even a "craft" brew from the macros, but doesnt even come close to being a quality craft-brewed IPA. Color and appearance are similar to my previous rating ... average. I rate this beer, "Bah, whatever."

"Harpoon IPA was ranked atop both domestic and imported IPAs by Beer Connoisseur Magazine." So the commercial description says, but this IPA does not live up to the hype. It pours a dark golden color. The sugary sweetness is a surprise to the nose. This sweetness is accompanied by a strong prescence of orange citrus hops. Light bodied with notes of sweet malt and moderate citrus hop flavorings. This one wont be making the top of my IPA list.
