COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our interpretation of this English style ale is deep garnet red in color with a distinct malt backbone balanced by a unique blend of hops. Cheers!

12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear, dark, copperish-red amber color with a moderate head of smooth, beige tinted foam. Settling to a thin outer ring, the head leaves behind a sudsy wash that mostly returns to the body, save for a scant few spots that dry. The nose is strongly alcoholic and overly grainy, suggesting of stale wheat, some peppery rye, and a bit of unwanted cardboard. Hops are bold, pithy, and citrus driven, hinting also at pine resin. Flavors largely follow suit, again based in booze and grain, attacking the tongue with both an alcoholic burn and a biting, bitter hop finish. Hints of stale dark fruit also emerge, but they certainly do not help matters. The palate is a bit under carbonated, not much, but enough. The boozy heat is rough doing down. Overall, Id pretty much call this a failure across the board. Very disappointing, because the Leviathan IPA was very good when fresh.

From the 2010 batch stamped #316 - properly aged for three years. It pours a beautiful looking copper amber with a lingering, soft tan head. Maybe a hint of red when held to the light. The aroma is malt forward immediately and sweet with a kind of apple or pear character dancing around the edges. Low hop aroma. The body is medium and smooth. The taste has a sweet malt beginning and then I get the earthy, floral hops erupting in the aftermath and lingering briefly. This one has aged beautifully.

12oz Bottle. Nice warm, fruity, fresh and malty aroma. A nice redness to this example, with a good lick of up front hoppiness. Pours a slightly hazed dark amber, with plenty of creamy, soft off-white head. The flavors are not extremely complex, and the malt base seems a little less dense than I would expect for a 10% barleywine, but I appreciate the added perception of dryness. Its kind of like an unhoppy Stone barleywine, not a lot of raging malt action. Finishes clean and bright. This is a fine beer, just a little safe.

The aroma is caramel, toffee, fruit. The appearance is deep red/brown, translucent, off-white head. The flavor is caramel, fruit, floral hops. The finish is floral hops, light sweetness. Medium in body, very slightly thick, oily mouthfeel. The floral hops dont appear until the you taste the beer, but make their presence known thereafter. Pretty good overall.

OK but I was expecting more. A hoppy aroma with a lot of rubbing alcohol starts this out. Looks good enough, amber with a small head. The taste is a bit sweet but dominated by bitter hops and the alcohol is a little bit too evident.

12 oz bottle. Pours a clear, dark amber/brown with rich beige head. Aroma of strong malt, notes of honey and strong fruity esters with a touch of alcohol spice. Flavor is very much the same and sweet with fussel notes, candy sugar, pepper and strong bitter finish. Mouth feel is heavy body with medium-high carbonation. Overall, not bad.
