pours dark brown with a touch of red. nose is dark fruits, sour yeast, and alcohol. taste is vinous dark fruits, caramel, bread, and spice; thick, syrupy mouthfeel. dry, somewhat bitter finish, which isn’t surprising as i encountered surprisingly little sweetness while tasting. very boozy from start to finish.
Rated on 6-25-2012 (2012 Version) This bottled beer has a small semi-fizzy tan head that fully diminishes, reddish brown body, very little carbonation, and no lacing. The aroma is malt up front, hint of pepper and dark fruits. The flavor is malt forward, some alcohol, light pepper, and dark fruits. The mouthfeel is semi-lively and this beer is medium bodied. Overall, I did not particularly like the pepper characteristic of this beer as it took some of the flavor away from me which is disappointing as this is one of my favorite beer styles. It is a sipping beer and is worth trying. BlowOffTube (515) - Michigan, USA - MAY 1, 2014

Hazy coffee colored pour. Not much of a head. Almost still. No lacing. Huge alcohol aroma with some malt. Taste is a very pronounced alcohol with some minute dry fruit notes. A bit grainy in the back and quite warming.

Thin, tan head thats short lived with little to no lace. Pretty, clear mahogany color with a lot of floaties. Dark fruits and sweet malts, some banana esters in the nose with a lil booze. Body is full and oily on the palate, soft carbonation, lil acidic. Medium sweet malt, caramel and dark fruit, raisin and prunes along with some candy sugar notes and cherries. Moderately sweet finish, grains and fruits. Surprisingly well done for Harpoon. Bottle from statelineliquors a while back. FROTHINGSLOSH (8142) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 17, 2013
Sampled on draft at the House of 1000 Beers this beer poured a very dark brown color with orange highlights and a medium sized creamy orange-tan head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was dark fruits, sugar, wood, tobacco and anise. The flavor was sugar, candied raisins, dates and black cherries with a boozy rum presence throughout and notes of toffee, tobacco, bread, anise and leather. Incredibly long finish of dark fruits, rum, tobacco, anise and leather. Wonderfully complex with flavors that come on in waves. Moderately full bodied. Very boozy but not that surprising given the alcohol content. Excellent. CpyNPrnT (640) - Indiana, USA - APR 2, 2013
Last 4 pack at the store. I am a big fan of quads in general, and curious how an American brewed Belgian style beer would stand against other Belgian style beers brewed at the monasteries. The best part of the beer is the taste, as it is full of everything with a strong alcohol presence to raisins to a body of dates. With an ABV clocking in at 11.75%, it shows in the initial taste but surprisingly the aftertaste does not linger as long as I would have expected. Worth trying if you can!
