Harpoon Leviathan Big Bohemian Pilsner

RATINGS: 117   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.4/5   EST. CALORIES: 270   ABV: 9%
The latest installment of the Harpoon Leviathan Series was brewed in the centuries-old tradition of Czech and Bohemian brewers. Harpoon Big Bohemian is a large lager with a clean maltiness and a huge aromatic hop character. Continental Pilsner, pale two-row, and Carafoam malt was used to brew this big, strong beer, true to the Leviathan Series. Pilsner malt is the classic ingredient of this classic style and the Carafoam malt produces a nice, frothy head. This malt mixture combined with Czech Saaz hops, the quintessential hop of the style, yields an assertive but not overly aggressive beer. The finish is dry with a lingering floral hop character.

12 fl oz bottle from Part Source (Syracuse), served at cellar temperature in a Scotch Irish taster glass.

App.: Clear bright golden with a large white froth. Aroma: Some nice grassy, peppery hops, biscuit/bready malts for support, a slightly soapy/sweet/floral note, some lemony citrus, light fruitiness with some berries and mango/tropical fruits, apples, a bit of alcohol, nice overall. Palate: Medium body, moderate-light effervescence, Pils-like smooth. Flav.: Old apple juice, fruitiness, quite soapy/floral, less of the peppery/grassy hops (still there though), candy corn?, esters make an appearance, honey?; sweet with decent bitterness, warming alcohol, an unpleasant grain spirit note and then fruity light malts to finish.

8/13/2009: Harpoon Leviathan Big Bohemian Pilsner... Aroma: Lemony citrus hoppines, light malt. Appearance: Golden (slightly pale), very clean and clear, small white head. Flavor: Pine, spruce and resin, a bit light, good balance with the bright maltiness, alcohol completely missing from the flavor. Palate: Medium light, a bit sharp but acceptable for the style. Overall: I like it. I like it quite a bit actually! This is a really well-done Pils!

12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear gold with a thin white head. Sweet aroma with a bit of lemon and grass. The flavor is sweet malt followed by lemon and grassy hops. Mild-moderate bitterness at the finish. Alcohol at 9% is very well hidden. Very enjoyable.

Sampled at vt brewfest 09. Pours a golden yellow with a white head. Aroma is grainy and bready with some grassy hoppiness. Flavor was similar to aroma with a touch of fruit and has some pale malt sweetness with a medium body and has a dry finish.

Fresh bottle. Pours a crystal clear golden color with a number of effervescing streams of micro bubbles. A thick head of fluffy, snow white foam settles in slowly to a clumpy, lilypad-like patch. Ultra-sticky, pronounced, broken sheets of lacing coat nearly the entire glass. Its a pretty looking brew. The nose starts out with bready, doughy yeast notes, followed by soft, creamy malts and fresh, grassy hops. Its really clean and robust smelling, creamy and bready and everything a big pils should be. Flavors follow suit, with peppery, grassy hops balancing out the pale malt sweetness, while heaps of cream and soft, yeasty dough smooth things out. The palate is smooth as can be, with very lightly zesty carbonation and a body that tows the line well between substantial and refreshing. Good stuff. l really like this style when its well done, as this one clearly is.

12oz Bottle. Super juicy, gummy, fragrant and fresh hop aroma. Sticky noble hops backed with fresh, snappy bread and cracker pilsener malt. A mostly clear deeply hued golden, with a translucent haze and a clean white head. Flavor is a strong continuation of the aroma, with beautiful pilsener malt character, a drier, grassier feel on the hops and a warming, comforting alcohol that compliments the hops and the malt, but adds a depth to the beer. Really impressive and really well done. So nice to try an example of this style thats so clean and fresh. Delightful!

Pours a cloudier gold. Taste is very sweet for a Pilsner. Almost more of a saison or something or even a bock. Well done, i just wish they didnt call it pilsner.
