Harpoon Leviathan Big Bohemian Pilsner

RATINGS: 117   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.4/5   EST. CALORIES: 270   ABV: 9%
The latest installment of the Harpoon Leviathan Series was brewed in the centuries-old tradition of Czech and Bohemian brewers. Harpoon Big Bohemian is a large lager with a clean maltiness and a huge aromatic hop character. Continental Pilsner, pale two-row, and Carafoam malt was used to brew this big, strong beer, true to the Leviathan Series. Pilsner malt is the classic ingredient of this classic style and the Carafoam malt produces a nice, frothy head. This malt mixture combined with Czech Saaz hops, the quintessential hop of the style, yields an assertive but not overly aggressive beer. The finish is dry with a lingering floral hop character.

Lucent gold, thin white head, medium-full body, medium carbonation.

Aroma: fruity floral hops.

Taste: lots of crackery pale malt, lots of mild vinous floral nobel hops, and a little bit of yeast.

Pleasant and nicely balanced. Big but simple. More a pairing beer than a sessional.

Earthy malt aroma. Grassy, leafy hops. Pale malt aromas with herbal notes. Very forest-like overall. Ultra-clear straw yellow color. Huge champagne bubbles. Retention of this big, white head is great. BIg gobs of lace. The flavor is earthy (ie. dirt) malt taste; grainy. Bitter, grassy Euro hops. A real bitter, herbal finish. Some medicinal, slightly astringent/sour qualities. Creamy feel like juice, but fizzy and bubbly. Has a distinctive bite at the swallow. Makes it a nice sipper. Strong: a bitter "pils" to swallow.

Bottle - Poured a hazy golden yellow in color with a small white head that faded to a thin rim around the top of the beer. Aroma is fruity with citrus, fairly sweet malts and a pleasant graininess. Flavor is about the same... citrus/lemon and malty grains with flowery hops and a hint of alcohol... although not nearly as much as it contains. Finish is slightly bitter and hoppy. I like this!

THOUGHTS: The bottle was a couple months past date, but it didnt seem to mater. Very intense. Fairly European. Hid the alcohol very well. Very crisp and easy to drink for something this big. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a light to medium, golden, yellow with a large, off-white head that slowly diminished and kept a nice sheet and left excellent lacing. The aroma was moderate, straw, cookie and pale malt; moderate to heavy floral and grassy hops; lighter perfumey hops; light honey and a hint of lemon. The initial flavor was moderately to rather sweet and slightly bitter; while the finish was rather sweet and rather to heavily bitter with a fairly long duration. There was pale malt, slight honey, straw, floral and grassy hops and slightly metallic hops; The medium body was very crisp. It was slightly syrupy and and then dry with fizzy carbonation and a lightly metallic finish.

a real ggod beer. A real good pilsner. Light in color with a nice hoppy aroma. Its got a subtle sweetness that overtakes the intial hops flavor. Finishes slightly dry. My second offering from the leviathon series and another winner.

Slightly grassy malty with big dry noble hop aroma, slightly medicinal... Sprucy/piney flavor, but not in an IPA style way... Good flavor, different for a pils, but in a creative way... A bit boozy, medium full bodied,

golden pour with fizzy head. Grassy hops and toasted malt in the nose. Sweet sweet toasty malts in the mouth with some sweet grass hops and some lemon zest. Pretty refreshing and pleasant.

This is light gold, almost yellow in color. Aroma is of hops and orange and lemon peels. Taste is very hoppy and citrusy. I can pick up a lot of lemon peels and some orange. Has a nice and smooth finish. Another good one from Harpoon.

(Sample Date: 8/22/2009 Source:Other) Grainy with a good dose of grassy hop aroma. Crystal clear light golden with rocky white head. Grassy hay like hop flavor. Bitter but a lot of malt sweetness to back. Dry bitter finish.

Draft. Pours transluscent golden with a thin white head. Aroma of citrus, apple, hops, yeast, and hints of coconut and banana. Medium bodied with a crispy, slightly tangy mouthfeel. Good pils.
