Pours amber with no head. Smells like caramel malts and booze. Taste is sweet and alcoholic with caramel malts, grains and a little leather. Dry finish. Alcoholic after taste.

Bottle marked 2012 -- something from the back room? Or just now hitting shelves or the first time? Nose is sweet with cola-like caramel, brown sugar, light peaty smoke, and lovely layered malt (some grapes, earth, near spice, dense complexity). Pours dark, cloudy amber leaning toward brown, with a sudsy beige head. Taste is sugary sweet without cloying, low but steady bitterness, low butterscotch, very light alcohol fumes (WOW 10.2? abv?!), vanilla, very faint esters, earth, fullish body with light stone fruit and lighter carbonation. Good secondary malt development, lightly toasted, peppery and spicy behind the great wall of smoothness, and very gentle smoke. No error to call this vinous, or perhaps better put, more like porto, only without any oxidation. This is essentially the ale form of a great Doppelbock, and a malt bomb, only with more booze (and hiding it better). Glad to see this has held up so well, whenever it’s from! Amber to brown color, nearly clear. Requires two pours to tame the head, but this settles to rim bubbles which leaves some layered lace.
First impression is fresh paint, like when I was building model airplanes. Leans toward the darker malts albeit with a strong alcohol kicker.
Rich and malty with a touch of molasses sweetness. Lots of alcohol warmth. As advertised, this is a big beer. The swallow reminds me of a cross between Brandy and Scotch--that’s how strong the alcohol is. Short aftertaste except for the strong aperitif warmth.

Appearance: Deep amber-hued body, clear, with a scant, beige head.

Smell: Mildly smoky, mildly sweet-scented caramel, with bready notes, faux strawberry, and a double shot of alcohol.
Taste: Sweet, with a light nuttiness of toasted cashews. Also, toasted bread. Low peat character. Mingled, mangled berries and peppery herb as a sharp acetone burn sets in. Sweetish, toasty/nutty finish with a final kick of booze.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Some stick, some burn present.
Overall: Guh! Like eletronic packaging, I’m really, really trying to get into this, but, at this point, I’m ready to just chuck it in the trash.
2012 Bottle. Pour is ruby with a two-finger-wide white head. Good lacing left after the head fades. Aroma of apples, cinnamon, toffee, and slight alcohol. 2012 bottle I randomly found in DC. 12oz bottle pours a hazy, garnet amber with some creamy, lacing, beige head. At first waft, the nose has a TON of banana bread, some vanilla, port, caramel, slightly woody, a little pine, some tamarind. Flavor hits you with some sweetness, pine sap and then a top of sherry/port, some cherry syrup, a little peaty, some tobacco leaf, some caramelized parsnip. Full, sticky, syrupy finish. Orange-amber pour with a white head. The aroma has a ton of malt with some strong sugar notes, dark fruit and alcohol. The flavor is more complex. I get a lot of peat notes as well as some grapes, dark fruit, caramel and toffee, and alcohol. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark reddish caramel color with a medium sized foamy-soapy beige head that faded and left no lacing. The aroma was malty sweet toffee with touches of wood and smoke. The flavor was malty, toasty and sweetish with moderate caramel and touches of smoke and honey. Very earthy flavor, definitely a good example of a heavy duty Scotch Ale. Take this one really slow.
