Formerly known as Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA.

We welcomed the challenge of brewing a 90 IBU Imperial IPA that would showcase glorious American hops while maintaining a multi-dimensional character. Bring on the hops!

This Imperial IPA is brewed with loads of pale malt and just enough caramel malt to provide a sweet malt backbone to balance the hop intensity. We used a mix of our favorite American hops including Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo to create a complex hop flavor and lingering bitterness. Harpoons proprietary yeast lends fruity esters, while dry-hopping at the rate of over one pound per barrel produces this beers massive aroma.

Bottle from Binnys South Loop. Pours a nice gold color with a nice head. Nose is very pungent, citrusy and resinous, a little dank. Taste is bold and brash, very in your face. Super hoppy and bitter, but never making you hate it. Nice and fruity with the resiny notes. Finishes dry and clean. Damn fine stuff.

Tap at the brewery. Pours a hazy bright orange with a nice lasting fluffy white head. Aroma is very citrusy with some pine and topical fruits- cent amarillo, simcoe etc-. Flavor has a nice big malt backbone but only moderately sweet- nice resinous hops, simcoe tropical, some citrus pine and orange peel- with a pretty good tacky bitter finish- not as dry as some, but overall pretty good- reminded me a lot of DFH 90 min when it is fresh.

12oz bottle from Norms, Vienna. Crisp light orange pour, with a lively albeit small head. Body seems fairly clear for a beer this big, and indeed this is borne out in the somewhat thin mouthfeel. Nice fruity nose, with some strong citrus rind and a bit of tropical fruits in there. Taste is pert and refreshing, not much malt and a fairly dry finish. Decent DIPA.

Bottle, bonus from trade with RCL. Pours a hazy orange hued gold with a bubbly white head. Nose is full of sweet hops. Grapefruit, pine resins, and pineapple. Taste is heavy with grapefruit and pine resin. Mouth is full and bitter, long bitter finish. This is an excellent hop bomb.

Tap @ Gingerman NYC. Slightly hazed amber color with an off-white head and plenty of lacing. Citrus and floral hops at first but that seemed to change for the rest of the beer. Grapefruit takes over big time with orange skin notes as well. Orange and floral hop flavor with a malt base that tries to come through. Dry moderate-strong bitterness. Very long finish with a medium body.

Bottle from Chris. Aroma of sugary malts, floral hops, and fruity esters. Pours a translucent orange amber with a foamy pale yellow white head and spotty lacing. Medium bodied and average carbonation. Flavor of pale malts with some toastiness, countered by a piney bitterness. Average amount of residual sweetness. Lingering grapefruit bitterness. Not bad, but not very cohesive and hop profile is not that exciting.

Tap @ brewery. I really enjoyed this one. A strong but not overpowering floral aroma with a hint of citrus. A bright orange-golden color. The flavor is intense, very hoppy and bitter but still very drinkable. This ones a sipping beer, it really can hit you hard. Nonetheless, a great beer for those who enjoy lots of hop flavor.

Pours yellowish with white head. Not so nice. Aroma with tons of bitter citrus, honey, some flowery notes, and slight herbal tones. Flavor is resiny citrus, grapefruit and lemon, with a long bitter finish. Slight caramel in the background, but very little malt to speak of. Decently full palate. Very bitter.
