first time having a dunkel. Thick creamy and tan head, lasting a while. Smell of malt and hops. Flavor is good, malty and hint of hops and some sort of fruit. Dry finish. All the reviews say that this is not a dunkel. I cannot attest for that, but I can say that I think it is a damn good beer. ambroze (22) - Old Hickory, Tennessee, USA - DEC 9, 2004
Very good dark beer. Good body. It has a very sweet taste. Very nice flavor. BigBen2120 (688) - Derry, New Hampshire, USA - AUG 17, 2009
12oz bottle purchased as part of a mixed 12 pack at Market Basket. Pours a translucent dark brown with a good half inch of light tan head. Smells sweet, with chocolate and caramel malt character with banana and nut playing roles. Nut, chocolate, coffee comprise most of the flavor, hints at peatiness? Chocolate dominates the finish and aftertaste. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. Full-flavored with no real perceivable flaws. A solid brown ale, and another slam dunk for Harpoon! mkobes (2142) - paramus, New Jersey, USA - DEC 27, 2003
Pretty good. Clean in flavor. Dark in color. Caramel notes to it. Not a bad beer. Good beer made by Harpoon. I enjoyed it. Roasty. rampmaster (642) - Alden, New York, USA - MAY 8, 2008
This dark Bavarian inspired beer pours a very dark copper color with a dark ruby red hue. A big frothy tan head sits on top which hangs out for awhile and left behind delicate lacing on the glass. The aroma is sweet and bready with a light hopy and nutty character. Its flavor is full of dark sweet malts. There are burnt caramel, dark toast and chocolate notes over a moderately bitter hops. The malt sweetness lingers into the finish. It has nice medium body with good carbonation a silky smooth texture. I really enjoyed this beer and would defiantly recommend this to anyone who enjoys dark Munich style beers.

VERY NICE somewhat sweet and dense dark brown ale with an ash flavor and mouthfeel. Good fresh malt flavor it is smooth and complex. Bit of bitter on the finish it is a simply surprising hybrid of a German style flavored brew made better! SATISFYING!
Growler pour into a pint glass.
Pours a clear medium brown with a half finger white head. Ok head retention and lacing for being out of a growler.
Aroma of roasted malt and toast. Some caramel is evident along with grassy hops and dark fruit.
The flavor is much like the aroma although has much more depth. Toast and roasted malt is very prominent up front but there is a nice grassy hop backbone. Biscuit and vanilla are underneath along with some dark fruit and a little bit of wood. Mouthfeel is crisp and somewhat drying without the least hint of cloying sweetness.
Overall, I really like this beer. A great thirst quencher with plenty of flavor. This is nicely done by Harpoon and is probably my favorite beer from them that I have tried so far.

In a bottle. Very tasty. Roasted malty flavor. Smooth and easy to drink. Not bitter at all. monkeyman (58) - Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 27, 2003
Undated single bottle. Astonishingly good! Great chocolate flavor – almost a chocolate soda, with great carbonation. Reminded me of Fullers Porter at first sip… probably not true to the Dunkel style, but very tasty. NYHarvey (2153) - New York, New York, USA - MAY 19, 2005
UPDATED: JUL 19, 2007 Smelled like roasted hazelnuts and carob. Poured with a smallish fading head. Nice feel almost approaches a watery porter. Well balanced flavors and benefits from a good hop/malt ratio. Solid.
