We decided to brew this beer after Rich and Dan visited Cologne, Germany, the birthplace of the Kölsch style. They loved the subtlety of the flavor and appreciated the craftsmanship required to make a beer like this consistent and good. We were on the lookout for a new summer seasonal at the time and the Kölsch, with its refreshing flavor and crisp finish, seemed like a perfect fit.

Our version of the traditional German Kölsch-style ale. This beer, which is light and refreshing, appears to resemble a lager rather than an ale. The Kölsch style is a testimony to the broad spectrum of characteristics an ale can produce, as well as the brewer’s art. The body is soft and delicate with a dry, crisp finish. Available April thru September.

Beer poured very bright and lively into my pint glass. Color was a clear pale yellow. Medium white head. Smell was intriguing. Mildly sweet with just a touch of grassy hops and a hint of white grape juice. The taste was mildly sweet with medium hop bitterness. Again, a touch of fruitiness. Finish is grassy hops. The only negative was a very slight metallic taste on the late finish. Mouthfeel was lively with medium carbonation. Light-to-medium body. Overall, a nice beer. Light and tasty with a nice blend of sweetness and bitterness. Great with light summer fare.

From notes (8/19/15). This is a pretty good interpretation of a Kolsh -- it’s got some toasted grain flavor, a fairly crisp, light finish, and a bit of hop bite to firm everything up.

Taste is a lil skunky but has a really really good after taste. Color is good. This is definitely one I’ll be drinking again.

355ml bottle form the discount rack. Mildly hazed gold pour, very mildly. Good aroma on this one, crisp noble hops. FLavor leaves a bit to be desired, not as dry as the nose would lead you to believe, watery as well adn hte malt is obtrusive, koelsch malt shoudl be clean and almost indecipherable.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a pale yellow with a one finger bubbly white head. Light grains and lemon zest on the aroma. Light lemon and lighter citrus hop on the flavor. Medium to light body. Simple summer beer.

Pours a clear golden with a small white head that leaves nice lacing that coats the glass quite intensively. Nose is of grains, slight "corn" (I seem to be the only one picking this up so uh... maybe I meant straw/hay?) and grassy hops. Taste is of grains and slightly fruity, moderately bitter. Fairly dry. Body is low and carbonation high to the point of being aggressive. Overall an OK ice cold summer drink but not much more. It needs a bit more body and a toned down carbonation for it to be considered good in my book.

Bottle 355ml. Pours blond with medium white head. Good lacing. Aroma is of grain, some fruits. Taste is of grain, bitterness, some fruits. Palate: Light-medium body. High carbonation. Overall: Nice, clean. Straight-forward.

Pale golden color ; big , white head. Aroma of malt , hay , bread and fruits . Clean , malty , grainy taste with light bitterness. Crisp , thirst-quenching beer. Good example of the style. It looks like many people expect more , but not every beer has to have tons of hops or high ABV.

Nice to see a summer without a lot of silly fruit experiments going on. This classic Kölsch has all the refreshing lager aspects with an authentic German bite to it. Great celebratory hot weather victory beer.

drsandman (1482) - New York, USA - JUL 13, 2015
Pours a pale gold, minimal head. Aroma is straw, earth, must, hay, grains, light pils hop, grass. Flavor is light sweet malt, bread, grain, grass, earth hop. Light/med body, grainy malt, dry finish.

tfontana (1014) - Fremont, New Hampshire, USA - JUL 10, 2015
Bottle from Harvest Market, Bedford NH. Aroma is mild basement. Appearance is pale yellow with almost non-existent head with minimal lacing and fair sparkle. Taste is lightly bitter. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with thin texture, lively carbonation and light bitter finish. Overall, not much to this. Admittedly, this isn’t a favorite style of mine, but I don’t think it’s terribly good within the style.
