bottle at mondial 2014, mtl. pours unclear medium dark brown with a tall light beige head, good retention and lacing. roasted sweetish grains, lightly tart lacto contamination imparting more fruitiness - cherries or simply red fruitiness, dark caramelized nuts, grassy, peppery, coffee grains, metal. average carbonation, light to medium body - oily, moderately sweet, lightly tart and spicy finish. Bottle - 500ml at Mondial de la Bière (Montréal, QC). Very dark brown body with a thin beige foamy head. Good malty/hoppy aroma with chocolate and woody hints. Not really overly familiar with this style of beer, but by crikey I enjoyed this bot. This porter was probably a bit too cold straight out of fridge, but I was too impatient to let it warm up a tad. Wow, she’s full of flavours, chocolate and coffee and nuts. It poured with a good head, that kept up with the pace in my clean (ah-hum Monteiths) porter glass and had good lacing. Bottle. New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. The aroma has chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Black coloured beer with an off-white head. The taste is smooth, has chocolate. Some carbonation there. Nice flavours.

Pours dark mahogany, looking near black in the glass, with a thin head, most of which soon disappears.
Feel: Full body and nicely smooth; low but adequate carbonation.
Aroma: sweet and fruity, with hints of raisins and cherries. Dark roasted malts in the background. Somehow, much less pleasant than this sounds.
Flavor: Sweet and fruity but better than the aroma. Still rather boozy, with a suggestion of bourbon or brandy in the finish and aftertaste.
Feel: Near medium body and nicely smooth; low but adequate carbonation.
O: a boozy, sweet porter.

Initial thought was that it was a one trick pony, but one that I liked a lot. Definite improvement as it warmed.

UPDATED: JAN 6, 2014 “Ball tickler”…is that it? Is that what Baltic Ler comes down to? …*facepalm*… I must confess that, as a devotee of Baltic Porters, the first time when I tried this beer about a year ago, I did bother to try to find the inconspicuous Baltic port allegedly named “Ler”. Well, there is indeed a place called “Ler” in Norway, probably within the Artic Circle, but but I’m not even sure if ships can reach it, and it is far, far away from the Baltic Sea. Not that one. Then, there is a place in Germany called Leer, by an inlet in the North Sea (so it’s still rather far away from the Baltic). With a famous cheese named after its local dam, I thought that maybe it was a Hansa League Port, maybe the referred “Ler” port. But no. Ball-tickler…Tongue and cheek? Well, let’s leave body parts out of the conversation, as the beer is actually much better than the pun. By far the best of Harrington’s dark beers. Not as pungent salty or seductive as I would like to, but certainly this Baltic Ler is more than good to seduce me when the lights are off. And of course when the lights are on. Nice and oily black. There’s plenty of red fruits, dates, malts, chocolates and spices in the nose, I mean the aroma (I said I’d stay out of anatomical parts) and flavours. I don’t get much coffee, which is a plus, and there is even some resinous absynth touch it. It’s a mouthful, greasy of course, as a Baltic porter should be. This is fantastic! Gorgeous flavours: prunes; raisins; coffee; vanilla and touch of cocoa. Beautiful mouthfeel: pinguid with slight carbonation. A perfect encapsulation of a baltic porter; a must for stout/porter fans. Thoroughly impressed.
