Voted ‘World’s Best Dark Barley Wine’ at the World Beer Awards 2012.

This strong dark barley wine is reminiscent of the strong ‘stock ales’ drunk during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and should be treated with respect.

Cask at Charlie’s Bar, Copenhagen. A chestnut brown beer with a thin light tan head. The aroma has notes malt, caramel, as well as lighter notes of notes and spices. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of malt, caramel, hops, alcohol, and very ripe berries, leading to a bitter and alcoholic finish.

Hand Bottle unfiltered at Chris-Os Pre GBBF 09 tasting ... copper ... sweet toffee nose ... sweet toffee little hop ... quite juicy

Cask at the Wenlock Arms, London. Poured a cloudy, ruby-brown with an easy, off-white head. Sour malt aroma with faint fruits and earthy hops. Sweet, tart, malty flavor, also vinous with hints of sugar plums, apples and toffee, syrup and brown sugar. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Has a sweet, wine-like finish with a boozy kick and more sour notes. Awkward, but decent. Can’t really understand the tart, sour fruit notes.

Cask at Charlie’s Pub, Copenhagen
Dark amber to brown color, hazy; a few lonely bubbles on the surface. The aroma is mild, vinous. It has a good body structure, very rich caramel flavor and malt, quite sweet, with a light woody astringency, light wine sourness that brings also a light fruitness; if possible, in the end there are some very light spices. The bitterness is quite high; the alcohol is present only as mouth warmer. Lovely.

harrisoni (19535) - Ashford, Kent, ENGLAND - FEB 7, 2006
Cask gravity at Dover BF 06. Dark reddish brown with beige head. Really quite pleasant if slightly sticky sweet, quite a meaty aroma with lots of orange. Nice dry hop finish and some boiled sweet. Better on the second half pint

Apparently an unofficial alias for the Christmas Ale after Christmas.
Cask (White Horse Parsons Green)
7 lovely sweet spicy, clove I’d say, appley aroma.
4 Deep red, next to no head.
8 glorious sweet toffee-apple retronasals. Touch of mushroominess, a little old-ale nuttiness too
5 Sticky sweet palate, no carbonation. Finish to die for, initially a sweet malt rush, quickly a wave of olde mushrooms, and then a gloriously resiny bitterness, which lasts a long time.
16 I often mark down such sweetness, but like Thomas Hardy’s you sometimes just have to forgive it.
