COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or Black Oil) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestouns award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.

Nov 2008 Bottling Poured into a tulip glass. Pure blackness with almost no head save the lace on the edge. Still, impressive blackness. The nose is all dark molasses with some alcohol and malt. The tongue has biscuit, molasses, wood smoke and a little alcohol. While it seems simple, the combination and balance are incredible. Thin and crisp body and low carbonation. Seems strange for this type of beer. Overall, very easy to drink. I was expecting more body for a cask aged beer, but I enjoyed it more this way. Not as bold as other cask aged beers, also not as obnoxious.

Bought some time ago. Bottled in 2014, so it spent some time with cellaring. Aroma: sweet, chocolate, caramel with a hint of soy sauce. Dark brown, almost jet black. Cloudy with almost no head. Quite heavy on sweetness, medium bitterness. Medium to full body, almost oily in mouth, flat (no carbonation). Long, chocolate, bitter finish. Overall: good, but it could be more intense in all aspects.

From 330ml bottle. Black with no head. Looks a bit flat and disappointing. Roast malt and coffee and quite a pronounced whisky taste from the cask. Not my favourite, to be honest ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

It pours black with a brown head. It has aromas of whiskey, coffee, vanilla, and dark fruit. It has flavors of roast, whiskey, coffee, vanilla, some dark fruit, and a touch of chocolate. It has a heavy body with a bitter finish. Overall, this has a complex combination of malts with whiskey flavoring that is not overpowering like so many others and a warm alcohol finish.
