COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or Black Oil) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestouns award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.

I really dig Highland Park whisky and I always have a bottle of Highland Park 12yr in my cupboard, So I am very excited about this brew! Pours a deep rich murky black body and a wispy tan head. The aroma notes of roasted malts, coffee, coco and largely suggests the peat smoke and whisky barrel. I enjoy the way that the Whisky barrel interacts with the characters of the old ale in the flavor. Seems like less oxidation on the beer, but Im sure its just the whisky overpowering the roasty oxidized malts. The palate is sticky and oily, a bit gritty. Finishes dry yet molasses sweet. A fine brew indeed!

Aroma Mainly of a great english porter: cocoa, some roasted malts, some vanilla probably from oxidation after aging. Little bit of alcoholly notes (although none in taste)less whiskey and wood but some whiskey is in the nose, the taste of whiskey and wood is however dominated by classic, very drinkable English porter, with some but not overwhelming roastness of malts. Overall incredibly pleasant, sweet, it is quiet medium bodied although easy drinkable and still complex. Definitely recommend! Drunk on 06.12.2016 - review typed from notes.

Bot no. 58440 date Feb.2012 to Sep.2016 Czarne, piana brązowa, drobna, niska, ale chętnie się tworzy, lekko zdobi szkło. Aromat palony, kawowy, wyraźnie czekoladowy i pełen whisky. W smaku gorzka czekolada, słodycz z nutą kawy. Przyjemnie palone i rozgrzewające na finiszu. Niskie, niemal płaskie nasycenie.

Bought some time ago. Bottled in 2014, so it spent some time with cellaring. Aroma: sweet, chocolate, caramel with a hint of soy sauce. Dark brown, almost jet black. Cloudy with almost no head. Quite heavy on sweetness, medium bitterness. Medium to full body, almost oily in mouth, flat (no carbonation). Long, chocolate, bitter finish. Overall: good, but it could be more intense in all aspects.
