Cask, hand-pull at WHOAF 2015. It pours jet black with a tiny, bubbly tan head. The nose is so rich, sweet, oily, stewed dark fruits, fruit cake, eccles cake, vanilla, cherry bakewell, sweet roast, juicy whisky, heather honey and light smoked peat. The taste is slick, oily, unctuous, warming alcohol, eccles cake, earthy roast, charred wood, Neapolitan ice-cream, liquorice, rich roast, mocha, stewed strawberries, umami, rocky road, burnt toast and a touch of peppery spice with a dry, warming finish. Full body and fine carbonation. Slick mouth-feel. Staggeringly brilliant, great depth and yet somehow highly drinkability. Perfect for a whisky and beer lover. Exceptional. Aroma: bourbon, peat, molasses, caramel, toasted malts, dark grains. Appearance: black, no head. Taste: medium sweet. Palate: very subtle bourbon, or should I say Whiskey, intensifying, alcohol, peat, oily texture, alcohol in the long finish. Overall: a ridiculous bargain at the Sloaney Pony for 90p on a Monday evening, fantastic palate, probably one of the best palates I’ve ever tasted. UPDATED: JUL 20, 2010 Ola Dubh 30 year cask, tap, half, at the Rake. Distinct caramel; oak, leather, woody mouth feel and vanilla. Similar oak reminscence of St Julien. MM. Much better on cask. Rake. Pitch black colour, small brown head. Aroma is mild smooth whisky along with caramel malts, some wooden notes as well as vanilla and some mild toasted notes. Flavour is whisky, wooden notes, vanilla, mild fruityness, roast and some slight alcohol as well. Extremely pleasantly balanced and drinkable.

Black brown, totally opaque, no head what-so-ever. It still looks pretty inviting though. Amazing aroma. A truck load of burnt caramel and chocolate, hints of vanilla and leather and a good 30 year vintage undertone. The flavour is full on creamy chocolate and whisky. The caramel and vanilla are there along with some dark fruit. Slight peaty hit in the finish and a good deal of the Highland Park showing through. Hints of seaweed and over ripe plum in the aftertaste. Actually, the aftertaste is what makes it. It’s sublime. Amazing length and giving up more of everything it has to offer. Certainly better than the bottled version. Bloody excellent stuff. Really smooth and dare I say it, downable. I’m really struggling to get this rate out quick enough. Sod it.
Cask at Ushers, as 10.5%. Pours quite flat, black. Whisky is dominant in nose but still in quite soft way, also dark chocolate, roast, dark fruits. Taste is very soft and smooth, whisky, peat, slight vanilla and burnt caramel, dark chocolate. Excellent soft and strong beer but strong whisky taste so you better like whisky as well. Cask in Tilley’s Bar, Newcastle. Black with a cream head. Whiskey aroma. Smokey with coffee and chocolate. Smooth and very good.
