4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottled March 2009. Pours a pitch black with almost no head. Aroma is of roasted coffee, some chocolate, and a hint of smoke. Taste is much of the same but I was pleasantly surprised that this wasn’t too heavy on the cloying sweetness of the malts. The subtle scotch undertone added by the aging is just right. The MF leaves a bit to be desired, a little on the thin side. Overall this was a pleasant surprise, especially since it was a gift.

Okay, time to try ths expensive puppy:
This pours a pitch black with a good 2 finger of tannish foam. Nice.
The smell has notes of whiskey, Smoke, vanilla, and some fruit.
The taste is very fruity(plum and black cherries) up front followed by some caramel, smoke, vanilla(which is done very nicely), more fruit, some fig, some toffee, and a light but satisfying whiskey flavour. I even get a touch of chocolate when I swish the beer in my mouth.
Nice thickish body here and it's lightly carbonated so I don't get distracted from all the flavours going on here. The head retention is *very* good and the lacing is good as well.
The more I sip, the sweeter it seems to get but it doesn't cross the border and become cloying.
Wow. I just took my last sip typing this. A good indicator of how drinkable it is for me. I know the alcohol is there, for sure, but the tastiness and smoothness of this Old Ale makes it easy to not notice it. Well done.
I'm sure glad I opted to get a few bottles of the Ola Dubh series as each one brought something different to the table and were very enjoyable. The only thing stopping me from seeking them out again is that they're so darn expensive!
Bottle from a friend. Black color, white head. Bitter taste with roasted malts, dark fruits, oak, a bit of whisky, chocolate, a bit of earthy notes and bread. Bitter finish with roasted malts, dark fruits, chocolate, wood, a bit of whisky and nuts. Excellent brew. sudomorph (1192) - Barrie, Ontario, CANADA - JUL 16, 2016
UPDATED: JUL 23, 2016 June 2013 bottle. Pours nearly with a bubbly, tan head. Aroma has smooth notes of roast, deep, dark chocolate, toffee, caramel, cola, smooth oak and whisky, hints of vanilla, and thought of smoke. Taste is balanced. Caramel, toffee, wood spice, soft vanilla cola, tannins, faint whisky, slight coffee, and oak spice. Medium-full body with a low carbonation. Slick but clean in the mouth. Overall super smooth. Dark flavours of caramelized, oak spice, cola, toffee, chocolate. Lots of flavours. Johnsense (1775) - - MAY 1, 2016
09 bottle, dark pour, no head. Peat, scotch whisky, smokey aroma and taste. Molasses, fig. Medium body. Probably spent too much time cellaring. allmyvinyl (11073) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - JAN 29, 2016
Keg at The Hanging Bat. Paired with Lovibond’s Sour Grapes, which made for an odd combination! Pours jet black with a very thin tan head. Aromas of chocolate, tobacco and leather, alongside light woody-boozy notes. Quite a sweet taste impression at first, but the then roasted malt and whisky make themselves known. A good beer should take you on a journey, and this certainly does.

TorbenJensen (1576) - Valby, DENMARK - AUG 30, 2015
It’s a foam poor ale, which is black and has the most delicate vinous aromas of dried fruit on a port-like manner. abemorsten (3683) - Mosterøy, NORWAY - MAR 14, 2015
Old Ale, Port, Barley Wine and Single Malt Whisky has combined in this magnificent ale. Light smoked malt is transferred to dried figs and prunes as becoming slightly bitter chocolate notes which go on to discrete port sweetness. From here we head for round caramel notes with whisky’s little dry alcohol to follow.
