Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a thin but lasting brown head. Strong aroma of malt, sweet. Taste: Very malt, notes of caramel, chocolate, very roasty, without being ’burnt’, and with notes of oak, sweet, with a full-bodied warming mouthfeel. Finishes with a sweet malty tastes, a little bit of a herb hop bitterness. Very very complex, with more taste notes emerging as it warms. Highly reccomended!

UPDATED: JUL 23, 2016 June 2013 bottle. Pours nearly with a bubbly, tan head. Aroma has smooth notes of roast, deep, dark chocolate, toffee, caramel, cola, smooth oak and whisky, hints of vanilla, and thought of smoke. Taste is balanced. Caramel, toffee, wood spice, soft vanilla cola, tannins, faint whisky, slight coffee, and oak spice. Medium-full body with a low carbonation. Slick but clean in the mouth. Overall super smooth. Dark flavours of caramelized, oak spice, cola, toffee, chocolate. Lots of flavours.

09 bottle, dark pour, no head. Peat, scotch whisky, smokey aroma and taste. Molasses, fig. Medium body. Probably spent too much time cellaring.

Keg at The Hanging Bat. Paired with Lovibond’s Sour Grapes, which made for an odd combination! Pours jet black with a very thin tan head. Aromas of chocolate, tobacco and leather, alongside light woody-boozy notes. Quite a sweet taste impression at first, but the then roasted malt and whisky make themselves known. A good beer should take you on a journey, and this certainly does.

It’s a foam poor ale, which is black and has the most delicate vinous aromas of dried fruit on a port-like manner. Old Ale, Port, Barley Wine and Single Malt Whisky has combined in this magnificent ale. Light smoked malt is transferred to dried figs and prunes as becoming slightly bitter chocolate notes which go on to discrete port sweetness. From here we head for round caramel notes with whisky’s little dry alcohol to follow.

Vale a pena experimentar!! Toast

Bottle:Almost black, almost no head; wood and vanilla detectable in the nose, molasses and dried fruits as well; moderate to solid sweet-bitter flavour, full bodied and smooth; lingering sweet-bitter finish of leather, sweet caramel. molasses and dried fruits, followed by a malty bitterness. Easy drinking thirst-quencher...
