A superb, rich, full-bodied beer derived from a 1970s homebrewing recipe. Wickedly smooth chocolate dominates the flavour, which is nicely balanced by the bitterness of the hops.

UPDATED: APR 22, 2011 Sept, 2002 I loved this. My type of beer - full of interesting twists and turns and a wonderful balance between hops and malt. I also enjoyed the fact that it seems impossible to place into a simple box - is it a stout, an old ale, a mild or a brown ale? Mmmmm. Chocolate, roasted barley, coffee, apples, etc, etc. A lovely beer! [3.2]
Feb, 2008 330ml filtered bottle from Gretna Green. The brewery are careful not to ascribe a style to this beer - they call it a "dark beer" and a "black, viscous beer", but not a stout or an old ale - neither of which it is, but either of which would be a useful guideline. There is lots of body - probably from the use of oats - and "oil" is an appropriate name. The carbonation is very light - just enough to give some life - and doesnt detract from the impression that youre drinking pure engine oil. The flavours are full, soft and firm rather than aggressive. Theres a twiggy bitterness with notes of chocolate, charcoal, tobacco and bread dough. A satisfying and enjoyable brew. [3.8]
April, 2011 Tesco Traditional Porter. Mmm what a classic beer this Engine Oil is. Smooth and easy drinking, yet with enough flavours to keep the interest. [3.8]

Very decent, old world Porter. Good mouthfeel for the fairly low ABV. Plenty of roasted malts, some bitterness and solid liqurice.

Bottle. Jet black pour with a thin steady tan head. Smells like chocolate and marshmallow. Taste is chocolate, breads, and some bitterness. A little raisin, It finishes wonderfully and hangs around all tastily in the mouth.

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330ml bottle. Pours jet black with small tan coloured head. Dark bitter chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, milk chocolate, dark fruits and a touch of grapefruit on the nose. Really thick, bubbly mouth feel. Taste is all of the above, with a nice bitter kick on the backend. This is fantastic stuff.

Pours with barely no foam. Color is very much like oil. Aroma is strongly burnt and old oil-like with roasted malts, raisin, plum, hassel-like nut, raspberry, vanilla, honey and plenty of other aromas. Clearly the aroma of this is very complex. Palate is noticeably oily and the carbonation is weak, in general it could be described "round". However the weak carbonation is not a problem, but I find it to fit this type of beer perfectly. Taste starts with a good amount of bitterness that stays for a while, but its not overwhelming, more like creates a very good "kick". The taste is dominated by burnt tastes. Additionally taste is dominated by the flavour of a very dark (and also slightly bitter) chocolate (like >85% cocoa) and a hint of alcohol. The taste has very little sweetness, but is more like a very well balanced or "straightforward" in terms of sweetness and bitterness. The taste is not nearly as complex as the aroma, but the taste is still very good and anyone liking very dark beers or stouts will probably find this an excellent drink.
